English people being scandalised by the singing of the EXTREMELY well known chant of "ooh ah up the 'ra" is one thing...but Irish people? Where have you been to be surprised by this

And to be clear I'm not saying all Irish people have to like it and agree with singing it, I'm saying I can't get my head around being surprised by it

It's so well established I was singing it in primary school before I knew what I was saying like. It's a banger??

@Selkies_ I remember all the centrist media heads were claiming that hearing a SF TD sing the same chant after getting elected "terrified" them, like...they'd be about my age, and there's no way you didn't hear that at the end of a night out 100 times a year

@Selkies_ When Nigel Farage raised a coffee mug to the ra, I don't remember such outrage.

@Selkies_ As soon as I heard the chant my first thought was they must have been singing ole ole ole. The two sentences go hand in hand. I don’t think any of us thought much about the lyrics until today.

@Selkies_ I would never and have never sung or chanted it or anything like it but the situation, the people singing it and the complete lack of malice or intent to offend by the singers mean that I am far more upset at the Irish people blowing it up (no pun intended). They apologised. end.

@Selkies_ I’ve never heard it being chanted in person, perhaps I just mix in better circles?
