I saw business doing what it does best @reindsummit . Networking. Apply this to education and workforce development. Treat it like a true investment not a donation. If you had a critical manufacturing need would you just make a donation and hope it works?.

The biggest hurdle in manufacturing ? .It’s not skill — it’s image. Students don’t know what modern manufacturing is. Neither do their families. Or their counselors. If we want them to take it seriously, we have to show them why it’s worth it.

If a program doesn’t already have support, money might not go far. The return comes when you also invest in:.The teacher. The students. The whole school community. They need to know this work matters.

Today I now run a program that is the result of those investments. We brought back manufacturing back one student at a time and it became a multiplier. But it still cannot live on passion alone. The investment must be consistent and grow with the program.

2. It happened because there was a need and a connection between industry and the school. It was not a check of $$- it started with time, mentorship, partnership. They saw the youth as a resource not a risk.

I didn’t realize the response that I would get from attending. My talk at the @reindsummit hit these keys points:. 1. I was once one of these students that shop class changed my life. Not because I liked to build things, it was because it was meaningful. We did real work.

I was able to talk about my program today. Great experience. Side note: right when I was struggling on stage, my 16-year-old daughter called me! And the call made it through “ do not disturb.” That was when I was able to recover and finish my talk. .

The ReIndustrialize Summit was full of true humanity that is doing all it can to revitalize our manufacturing base. For those of you that have put your efforts into Workforce Development the mission is critical. I have met so many people that drummed the beat for my program.

The chances are high that the Hawthorne High metal shop supplied workers in both of those factories. I know for a fact that we have alumni on the floor of SpaceX and the roots of our program are old enough that we are close to have alumni that walked the floor of Jack.

Over the years I have knocked on many doors just to bring attention to my program. Here are a few things I learned from those bloody knuckles. I want to help other programs grow. Most people don’t realize what real support for a high school manufacturing program looks like.

Pretty surreal — I’ll be speaking at Reindustrialize 2.0 in Detroit this month. Honestly, I’ve been working on reindustrialization most of my life — just from a high school shop. Teaching students how to run real machines, prototype ideas, and build things that matter. Not.

Many educational manufacturing programs and engineering programs work in isolation. Doesn’t matter what level. They need active engagement from industry. Not just to excite the youth but to guide what they teach. I am actively trying to build a list of education programs that.

Old Tech found in the corner. A Hard Drive. How we used to teach design. The beginnings of CAD. With lots of paper. I drew some of these in AutoCad from this exact file. Summertime in school means purging those lost corners in the shop.
