I bought my first car twenty years ago today: a 2005 Toyota Celica. Still have it, practically mint; recently hit 30,000 miles. In retrospect, my "alternate choices" list (from my blogging days) has aged well. I forgot about that.

Given the chance:.1) Meet your heroes. 2) Say thanks, and keep it brief. 3) When in doubt, bring extra plutonium. â˜ĸī¸đŸ˜†

Bless the folks live-streaming video game footage on YouTube labeled as "Super Bowl 2025." Tens of thousands of people watching, eventually figuring out something is not quite right - sort of like the video loop in "Speed." 🚌đŸ“ŧ.

I like to think I haven't changed all that much, of course; I still have too much fun making whimsical things in web browsers.

Twenty years ago today was my first day working at Yahoo! HQ in Silicon Valley proper. I got to meet my heroes, work with some great people and build some fun things at scale. It was a pivotal career experience, and I owe it to a number of folks who believed me worth hiring.

SDL Sopwith, ported from the original from 1984 and playable in-browser, and there's also a network version!. Fun game with a unique network-based company backstory. Watch out for those flocks of birds - and the CPU player, too; real nasty. 😅 đŸ›Šī¸

Someone wrote in to say they're showing my game remake to kids, teenagers and older folks in a teaching context. A high school kid getting into DJing asked about a DIY power supply for a mixer I've covered. I'm speaking with a CS student on tech. Purpose, meaning and place!.

Adapting touch controls for use with gamepads; decently playable. D-pad and/or joystick can navigate quickly and accurately. The Gamepad API has quirks between browsers and devices (and versions 😅), but it's workable.

This site is a handy resource, showing what each browser reports (and "supports") for connected controllers.

🎮 JS Gamepad API experiments: Mixed browser/device support, but usable arrays of buttons and axes ripe for abstraction. Testing on PS4 dualshock (rumble feature works in Chrome + desktop Safari), and an older 8Bitdo NES30 Pro - bluetooth and USB. iOS Safari too, minus rumble.

A prototype in progress: Armor Alley using Atkinson dithering on sprites. It's an interesting look.

There's just something to Bill ("MacPaint" et al) Atkinson's infamous image dithering that's wonderful. Bill is 73 and living with gratitude, per his own words. I bit these '80s images from and have no shame, also worth a look.
