Fisheries stocks that are most overfished and in need of management safeguards also suffer from the largest assessment biases. Our new study indicates that nearly twice as many fishery stocks have collapsed as currently recognized. https://t.co/iTnxIeLkzM

Effective fisheries management requires accurate estimates of stock biomass and trends; yet, assumptions in stock assessment models generate high levels of uncertainty and error. For 230 fisheries...

A deep dive into stock assessments of fisheries worldwide has revealed their sustainability is overstated. And it has implications for fisheries management and consumer awareness. Find out more about the IMAS-led study: https://t.co/G5oqywAOU8 📸 Renata Romeo | Ocean Image Bank

New comment in @NatureClimate. "This is not a call for inaction. We must act - with haste. But popular urgency should not prioritize technological and scientific feasibility over climate action and evidence-driven care for social-ecological systems." https://t.co/FGtcntTI8V

Ecological theory predicts that kelp forests structured by trophic cascades should experience recovery and persistence of their foundation species when herbivores become rare. Yet, climate change...

Devastating observations of severe #coralbleaching during our @CREGntu May 2024 field trip to eastern Sri Lanka. Aerial surveys show widespread bleaching on these beautiful high cover reefs 🪸🔥 We need field data to understand the impact of MHWs on coral reefs across #Asia

My second PhD paper has been published! https://t.co/6ICiHNu6eR…! Using the entirety of the reef survey datasets from @NUSReef collected by the various members across 35 years, we found that taxo and phylo diversity can increase while functional (trait-based) metrics decline.

Massive coral bleaching in the states of Alagoas and Pernambuco, Brazil. On track to beat the 2019 record of 19 DHW in Southern State of Bahia. 50% of the species that occur in Brazilian reefs are endemic. #extinction_risk #bleaching #climatechange

The 2024 mass coral bleaching event on the Great Barrier Reef in numbers (preliminary analysis): - 46% of reefs experienced record high DHW - new record of 17.7 DHW from the southern GBR - 37% of the GBR has been exposed to three or more >6DHW events in the past decade (1/n)

Mass coral bleaching unfolding at Lizard Island, northern Great Barrier Reef (March 2024). These events have become “normalised” to the point where it’s easy to forget that 20 yrs ago this would have been an unprecedented and isolated event.

In December 2023, this reef in the northern Great Barrier Reef was 100% coral cover. In March 2024, after ~6 weeks of prolonged heat stress, coral bleaching was extensive and mortality underway, with 80% bleached and 20% recently dead colonies.

A common paradigm is that corals begin to “starve” after four degree heating weeks. At just 5-6 DHW on the northern Great Barrier Reef it’s hot enough for the coral tissue to slough from the skeleton

meanwhile in the southern GBR.. mass coral bleaching (& recent mortality) at all reefs & sites surveyed this weekend, affecting vast majority of genera & all size classes; unfortunately, slope (~8m) almost as severely affected (~80% of colonies across sites) as the crest (>90%)!

More underwater images of the mass bleaching unfolding in the northern GBR. Water temperatures appear to be dropping after prolonged heating of >5 DHW, but the coral bleaching at this reef is severe (>80% colonies), with exceptionally high rates of mortality in juvenile corals.
