High vaccination rates are key to containing COVID. One major predictor of vaccine hesitancy is religiosity, and vaccination rate among biggest religious groups in the U.S. (e.g. evangelical Christians) is low. https://t.co/eCzhucyajq

How to improve vaccinations among Christians? One approach is to recruit religious leaders to advocate for vaccinations. Pros: they are trusted sources Cons: they typically lack medical expertise

In pre-reg'd experiment with 1,765 unvaccinated American Christians, we test a new approach: invoke religious identity of medical experts All participants saw a Q&A with @NIHDirector & @curtiscwrteam about vaccines, and read about doctors supporting vaccination

In the common identity condition, Collins identified himself as Christian, and the essay highlighted that most medical experts are religious. In the control condition, participants received the same information without references to religion. https://t.co/jFAhGtcTCG

Unvaccinated Christians in the common identity condition reported greater trust in the medical expert, increased vaccination intentions, and higher willingness to encourage others to get vaccinated.

Vaccine intention effects were very small, but the common identity treatment was subtle. Effects were stronger among people who were more religious, and were statistically mediated by belief that the medical expert shared participants’ values.

Takeaways: ⚡️Common religious identity cues can increase trust in medical experts. ⚡️Trust in science can be built by invoking common group identities -- even identities often assumed to be in tension with science.
