What an incredible day! After so many years of anticipation, the @VRubinObs images themselves are even better than any of us dreamed. So many treasures in this image, just 0.05% of the sky that Rubin will observe over the next 10 years. It's going to be an incredible decade!
Stanford researchers gathered on Monday morning to celebrate the release of the first images from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, which bring the night sky to life like never before. The digital camera at the heart of the telescope, designed and built at the Stanford-run

It has been fantastic to see this work come together with such an amazing team. Also, I learned a bit about spectroscopy and trained my eyes to be the best low redshift galaxy spotters in the world. See if you can beat me -- test yourself here:

These results provide essential information about how the Milky Way fits into a broader cosmological context. So much of our understanding of galaxy formation is built on detailed measurements of the system we can measure better than any other -- now we can see where it fits in!

We compare theoretical predictions to SAGA data in a paper led by Richie Wang -- providing new constraints on how galaxy and halo assembly are connected in low-mass systems.

@yaoyuanmao You can learn more about the star formation and gas properties of the satellites in this work led by @mgeha
https://t.co/sBnq8IGVwi Lots of the satellites are star forming! The Milky Way seems to be more efficient at quenching its small satellites than a typical MW-mass halo.

Many years and nearly 50K spectra later, we are super thrilled to share 101 Milky Way-mass systems and 378 of their satellites. Please see the survey paper here, led by the incomparable @yaoyuanmao, who makes everything he works on amazing. https://t.co/1Cb6uvDeC9

Breaking my long silence to share results from a project I have been working on for more than a decade. @mgeha and I were discussing how frustrating it was that there were so many comparisons of models to just ONE Milky Way. Why not 100 MWs, we thought? 🤔 https://t.co/aVxoNsSIyl

Check out this new paper with mass profiles measured for galaxies as small as M* ~ 10^8.5. Very excited about this and also about how quickly we'll be able to improve these measurements with more spectra and deeper photometry.
We’re excited to share the halo mass profiles of dwarf galaxies in the @theDESurvey✨! @RisaWechsler @yaoyuanmao @susmita_a, Joseph Thornton and I teamed up to pave a new road toward dwarf lensing from future surveys like @VRubinObs 🔭: https://t.co/nnXtaJCl1t

Was so fantastic to get a chance to chat with @SecGranholm and @aaberhe this week about the 20 billion galaxies and 17 billion stars we plan to map with the @VRubinObs Legacy Survey of Space and Time!
We were honored to host @SecGranholm, @ENERGY Under Secretary for Science & Innovation Geraldine Richmond, and @doescience Director Asmeret Asefaw Berhe yesterday. #OurLCLSstory 🔗 Full story here:

Can't wait to digest these results! Thanks to @astrobites for starting us off to understand them and to the whole @NANOGrav collaboration for the exciting discoveries!!
In eight new papers, @NANOGrav presents evidence for a gravitational wave background. In this bite, we provide an overview of their results and their implications #pulsartimingarrays #GravitationalWaves

Couldn't be prouder of Kihana Wilson @the_astro_stud for this well-deserved award based on presenting the research she did with my group last summer. Delighted that she's back @kipac to continue this work for the next few months -- watch out for what she does next!
