Since the Dobbs decision, the number of brick-and-mortar abortion clinics in the U.S. has dropped to 753—54 fewer than in 2020. Even in states where abortion is protected, clinics are closing. When clinics close, care becomes more difficult, patients travel farther, and pay more.

Mifepristone saves lives. Republicans are obsessed with banning mifepristone under the guise of safety, but let’s be real, it’s not about safety – it’s about power and control by forcing people to remain pregnant against their will.

Last year, some states made strides in expanding access to abortion care and protecting the rights of those seeking or providing essential care. Other states unequivocally failed to protect their residents.

Because of Trump and his anti-abortion allies, states can now subject their residents to strict bans, attack patients and providers with extreme legal repercussions, and put people in harm’s way by denying them care.

Louisiana’s anti-abortion Attorney General sued to end telehealth access to mifepristone, the most common method of abortion care in America. If the court sides with the anti-abortion extremists, it could severely restrict abortion access nationwide.

Black women have historically faced medical racism, which has led to unimaginable consequences, and we won’t stop fighting for justice. This Black History Month, we reaffirm our commitment to our mission, and we won’t back down in the fight for reproductive freedom for ALL.

Abortion care is life-saving care, and denying anyone necessary care has detrimental, yet preventable consequences. We fight for reproductive freedom so anyone can access the care they need without barriers – no prejudice, no bans, no judgment.

This Black History Month, we want to shine a light on several Black women who tragically lost their lives due to abortion bans and medical racism. Unfortunately, there are likely many more. All of these losses were preventable – yet the system failed them.
