California has 483 cities and every single one will be affected by this gerrymandering scheme. This morning I wrote about the effects on the city where I was Mayor twice, Newport Beach. Thank you @StuNewsNewport for publishing. 1/ 🧵

Every voter in Newport Beach is currently represented by the same Congressman representing Congressional District 47 (CD-47), Dave Min. The district is a classic “purple” district where 4,400 more Republicans are registered than Democrats, but neither party has a clear majority.

In the past couple of months, though, Gov. Newsom started saying on podcasts (where else?) that he wanted to push for a mid-decade redistricting. He said that this was in response to Texas considering a redistricting, which was itself in response to the Biden administration’s

Newsom’s threats moved toward reality recently when fully drawn, new Congressional maps suddenly appeared online last Friday afternoon (Aug. 15). These proposed maps would disenfranchise millions of Californians. How? One word: gerrymandering. 4/

Orange County bears the brunt of this spite. Whereas Orange County currently contains six Congressional seats, this new proposal splits O.C. into eight seats. The maps do so by diluting O.C. and putting significant swathes of districts into the surrounding counties of Los

Congressional District 49 (Levin) moves south and barely keeps portions of Orange County. Congressional District 40 (Kim) moves east and takes on much more of Riverside. Congressional District 45 (Tran) becomes a spider-like monster snaking from Fountain Valley to Norwalk. 6/

And Newport Beach gets sliced up and fed to the beast. Around three-quarters of Newport Beach would get carved up, join Huntington Beach, include Catalina Island, and be lumped into a district dominated by the city of Long Beach. The carve-outs create bizarre situations. 7/

Pelican Point will be in one district, Pelican Hill in the other. Spyglass Ridge will be in one district, Spyglass Hill in the other. Eastbluff will be in one district, Big Canyon in the other. One Ford Road in one district, Bonita Canyon in the other. And on and on and on. 8/

Those residents living in the Long Beach-centric district should be particularly concerned because it is presently represented by a congressman who endorsed and supported Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon’s recent (thankfully failed) re-election bid. 9/

This gerrymandering effort should fail for many reasons. Not the least of which is that the Sacramento elite pushing this power grab can’t “save democracy” by destroying democracy. Indeed, a Sacramento-based journalist has already reported that the state’s Senate leader, Mike

Thankfully, voters took the power to pick their voters away from the legislators and put it into an independent citizens’ commission 15 years ago. Voters would have to relinquish this power. We won’t do it. 11/

Assuming that this gerrymandering scheme makes it to the ballot, it will be incumbent on all of us to ensure that our rights and our safety are not jeopardized. Please join a growing opposition by volunteering time to convince friends and family to vote against this Sacramento

@RealWillONeill @StuNewsNewport NEVER FORGET: @CAgovernor Newsom opposed Prop 36 last year that is helping reduce crime, because he said we don't have enough $ for it!!?!¿ But... WE HAVE 250$ MILLION FOR A GERRYMANDERING ELECTION?!?!? 👀🤮SURE

@RealWillONeill @StuNewsNewport What Democrats need to understand is they will lose representation as well. Fresno is another victim here, their city will be carved up into five districts. Nobody will represent the city.

@RealWillONeill @StuNewsNewport Thank you for your leadership on this. What can we do specifically to stop this?

@RealWillONeill @StuNewsNewport They do it because they can. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. This is what it looks like.

@RealWillONeill @StuNewsNewport Courtesy of this thread, I learned a new word: "Gavinmandering." It fits that assweasel to a "T".

@RealWillONeill @StuNewsNewport Totally agree. I live on the Irvine side of Min’s district. Tearing Newport away from Irvine would also let Democrats run rampant here, since Irvine has become much more of a blue city in recent years. Living in a purple district holds both parties to greater account, and I think

@RealWillONeill @StuNewsNewport . @GovPressOffice @CAgovernor is a selfish fuck who only wants power. He doesn’t care about the people in Cali. Haven’t you all learned this by now? He was related to Pelosi, so there you go.

@RealWillONeill @StuNewsNewport California is collapsing. Disregard for our California constitution and refusing to keep their oath to uphold it makes Gov Newsom and our Legislatures supporting this action an unconstitutional government. It’s time for patriots to take California back. #IMISSCALIFORNIA

@RealWillONeill @StuNewsNewport voting NO. Definitely don’t want Robert Garcia floating into Newport. He has sent out 2 X posts supposedly before the maps were official that he will be our new rep, it was arrogant and telling thinking we have no choice but to accept this sham.

@RealWillONeill @StuNewsNewport Will, OC GOP is so fortunate to have someone as smart and articulate as you at the helm. Thank you for this analysis. If CA GOP had leadership like you provide, we wouldn’t be in the mess we are currently in!

@RealWillONeill @StuNewsNewport Solutions not effects please. Native to LA/OC and we seem to have a complaint vs solution issue. Lots of people pointing out how Republicans have no representation now. No one is exploring solutions. Taxation without representation is a very bad idea.

@RealWillONeill @StuNewsNewport The problem is that they cheat so we probably can't vote our way out of their rotten scheme.

@RealWillONeill @StuNewsNewport So if 40% of California voters are republicans and they no longer have representation does that mean they no longer have to pay taxes?

@RealWillONeill @StuNewsNewport This is an excellent thread, and while specific to OC, the implications are statewide in every county and city. It’s an absolute disaster.
