8/ Yet this is not only a story of loss. Farmers still return to their groves under fire. Co-ops still press oil. Children still learn to read the land through the olive’s shadow. Sumud - steadfastness - is not metaphor; it is daily practice.

7/ For decades we were sold a slogan: “the only democracy in the Middle East.” But a system documented as apartheid by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch cannot be democracy for all. The mask has fallen. The structures remain.

6/ This is how apartheid works in practice: Land confiscation Settlement expansion and outposts Water theft and well restrictions Soldiers and settlers blocking access to groves Trees slashed, burned, bulldozed with near-total impunity. It is racial-ethnic settler colonialism.

5/ An olive tree can start fruiting after a few years, but meaningful yields often take a decade or more. Many trees live and produce for centuries. Cutting such a tree is not just an act against today - it is an attempt to sever generations.

4/ In Gaza, the destruction is almost total. Legal and agronomic assessments indicate that +75% of all olive trees have been destroyed since Oct 2023; Palestinian experts estimate nearly 1 million of Gaza’s ~1.1 million olive trees gone. No harvest. No income. No continuity.

3/ Since 1967, Israeli authorities and settlers have uprooted over 2.5 million productive trees, including hundreds of thousands of olive trees (≈800,000–1,000,000) across the occupied territory.

2/ 80,000 - 100,000 Palestinian families rely on the olive harvest for part or all of their income. In some years, olives and olive oil account for a large share of agricultural output and rural income in the West Bank. Attacking olive trees attacks livelihoods.
