2/2 . But there are also a lot of people like me who believe that AI can help us improve society but it has to be done in a responsible manner. There are a lot of systemic issues we face today and while AI is not the answer, it has a role to play.

1/2 It’s easy to portray AI as the big bad wolf, and there are a lot of mistakes being made by the community and talent being wasted helping people shop. But. .

2/2 So if we’re going to even discuss designing an algorithm to predict suicidality, we first need to know the goal, the interventions it will inform, their effectiveness, & the deployment plan to ensure that it’s actually going to help people & that it’s the help they want.

1/2 An example: An algorithm that detects people at risk of committing suicide seems like a good idea to a lot of people. But, the consequences of being labeled as a suicide risk (correctly or incorrectly) also has huge consequences for people’s lives.

Ethics is end-to-end. It's not just about the data and the model but about the interventions, and people who are affected by AI systems need to be core participants in the design, development, validation, and monitoring process.

We talk about the dangers of AI, but we use these algorithms called humans that are really biased. We’ve tested them and know that they’re often horrible, but still use them to make really important decisions. We need to reduce these biases and AI can help detect and mitigate.

Apparently I'm twitter famous today & not even for something I actually said. I don't claim to never make mistakes, but I'm not building or advocating for an algorithm to detect if people are gay. While people are interested in the responsible use of AI, here are some thoughts. .
