Irish Rail holds 75 railway restaurant car licences to serve alcohol, these cost €500 each and were renewed in 2022 despite no catering service... Only 7 licenses are needed for Dublin Belfast €34,000 wasted on 68 licences which remain unused today

@RailUsersIe You never think of an arm of the state needing a license Is there actually 75 dining carriages in service, or just one for every trainset ?

@Padraiccleary ICR fleet 63, Mk4 8, Enterprise 4. There are a handful of other licences held but not by Irish Rail. The 29k fleet is NOT licensed in 2023 (but regularly sold booze pre covid), we are waiting on what is going on with the C3K fleet We believe no licence is required in NI at all

@RailUsersIe Is it a case of if they elapse they expire and therefore need to be applied for again? Therefore it’s easier to roll over than reapply. Cost is small over all. Of course adds up in the long term.

@Peteer Its €500 for new or renewal, no need for court attendance. Probably the easiest retail licence you can get, if only you own a train
