Very excited (and a little bit overwhelmed) to be elected as a Fellow of @AcadSocSci. Thanks to my colleagues who nominated, refereed and voted for me to join your ranks. I learned yesterday that it is quite a process! Congrats also to impressive colleagues also elected today.

5. Parents: thanks for everything you’ve done to support your kids over the past decade (plus). From experience, I really do think it is getting harder. Thanks 🫡 🙏. Take time to celebrate 🎉.

3. Uni is not for everyone straight away (maybe uni is not for you now, but it might be later, also you might change your mind and want to study something completely different: I did!) 📚.

This lovely @smh piece pretty much sums up my reaction when we drive home these days 😭. Not the same place (also: ☢️ is deadset the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard for transition in these beautiful towns, lovely communities, & their economies) 4/4.

On the other, beautiful rolling hills, like those on the property I used to do girl guide camping on, have been flattened and blasted into gaping holes, you can see open cut mines from the driveway of my grandparents’ farm and asthma is out of control in kids ……. 3/4.

My family have lived in that area since the 1830s (all in shackles and chains in the early days). I have super mixed views about the impact of mining in these people places. On the one hand they have provided good well paid jobs for many of my (male) family members…….2/4.
