When I was younger often dated men who said this sort of thing in the name of "honesty" and I hate hate hate it. People aren't aware of their own motivations and honestly I think the actual motivation in most cases was to take me down a peg or two.

@RachelBCam When I was engaged, we promised to be honest to one another--and I meant it, especially when it would have been better not to--but even I wasn't stupid enough to say anything like this, lol.

@RachelBCam It's a no-win for the dude. Tell 'em (honestly) they're beautiful for long enough and they go "You're only saying that because you love me". I still do, though, even though she doesn't believe me. :D
