@ProtonMail Just a heads up that it looks like the setup is not as ridiculous as their docs made it sound. There seems to be a secure hardware element that does add a significant (though not perfect) hurdle to accessing the user encryption keys.

Unfortunately not all "E2E" encryption claims are equal. Big Tech loves to sell privacy snake oil by claiming encryption and privacy, when in reality they hold the master key and can access your data on a whim.
Ridiculous: I just got access to the new "e2e encrypted" X Chat. But encryption key is stored on X servers (no choice), secured only by a (fixed length) 4-digit passcode. That’s ~13 bits of security. Trivial for X to brute force decrypt. Deceptive to call this e2e encryption.

Sending an email to someone outside Proton? You can still keep it end-to-end encrypted. Set a one-time password, share it separately, and you’re good.

This highlights a broader issue: privacy shouldn’t rely on trusting a company’s internal processes. End-to-end encryption ensures your messages can’t be scanned or used for training, by anyone.
