Ban bottom trawling in UK MPAs. Please sign if you have a moment: Nets as big as football pitches scrape away reefs and destroy marine life. Urge Secretary of State @SteveReedMP to take action now and truly protect the ocean. #BanBottomTrawling

Bottom trawling is one of the world’s most destructive fishing practices. By dragging weighted nets along the ocean floor β€” some up to 240 meters wide β€” bottom trawling devastates coastal habitats,...

Change of plans! Newcastle Uni have pulled funding for post PhD submission bursaries. So I'm on the look out for jobs to start in Jan/Feb 2025, including short term opportunities. Please let me know if you're aware of any invasive species research/management positions. Thanks!

Ever get #Antarctica and the #Arctic confused? πŸ€”β„οΈ Which has polar bears and which has penguins? πŸ§πŸ»β€β„οΈ And where does Santa live? πŸŽ… You’re not alone! The Arctic is an ocean surrounded by land, while Antarctica is a continent surrounded by ocean. 🌍

Holobionts and microbial consortia represent ecological units that can be investigated by eDNA/eRNA, and may be more sensitive indicators of ecosystem function and health than other eNA approaches

The media and political class is complicit in the far right, racist and Islamophobic violence we’re seeing across our country. This morning, I experienced the visceral denial of this reality.

3/ We discovered a reduction in microbial diversity with increasing latitude, in tandem with decreasing temperatures and shorter seasons of light availability. The functional diversity of microbial eukaryotes was also influenced by environmental conditions.
