Deeply, deeply uncomfortable at the thoughts of the young men and women of Ireland being told that they can’t go into a coffee shop to meet their pals, but serving their vaccinated elders in one is ok. Thinking of my students who deserve better from our State.

A little reminder to parents. You don’t need to do the elf thing. You don’t have to do a Christmas Eve Box. You don’t have to have matching pyjamas. You don’t have to organise presents from parents AND Santy. You don’t have to gift wrap presents when Santy leaves them.

The decision to keep schools open at Level 5 is primarily an economic decision. Please, do not patronise teachers by stating otherwise. The hazing of a profession is degrading and demoralising. See also, “pods” in rooms where you cannot socially distance.

It’s possible to be concerned about the welfare of children, and to have concerns about the public health situation and how it affects school staff. It’s not an either-or. The constant binary back-and-forth of half-baked ideas being presented helps nobody.

It would be helpful if, at some point, somebody in authority just said it aloud: schools are inherently a major risk of virus transmission, and the rest of society has shut down to allow for that risk. It’s not nice but there’s no point dancing around the issue.

Six stillbirths (and one miscarriage) in in ONE country in three months, but it would be disproportionate to consider vaccinating those pregnant. Six blood clots in 6.8m J&J recipients but it’s prudent to stop the whole thing. The cost-benefit ratio is different for women.

‘We will keep schools open’ isn’t an achievement. It’s a statement, and barely a strategy. Simply stating it - and getting kudos from certain journalists or other quarters - doesn’t make it so. What everyone wants is for schools to open sustainably. On that score we’re losing.
