They never got to know me. They worked like dogs (I get it, survival) but not being able to express myself was painful. They would ignore any opinions I had or shut it down, unless it involved school work, piano lessons or school activities.

They never treated me as an individual who had thoughts and a personality. My childhood was - keep quiet when the adults are talking, do your chores and excel at school - aside from that - meh, they couldn’t be bothered. Stop talking and go watch tv / do your homework
