Mark, why are you so cruel to people who are not the same as you? Are you ok?
Here’s a shock result. Dumbing down the test lifts student results!! Who would have thought? Isn’t the purpose of education to broaden knowledge beyond personal and cultural limits, to build imagination about things previously unknown? More Piccoli idiocy.

Our UNSW research shows contextualising test qns to make them relevant to rural & Indigenous students could close rural/metro reading gap by 33% & Indigenous/non Indigenous gap by 50%. Idea is not new but using a Randomised Control Trial to prove it, is.

Australian schools are becoming more segregated and that threatens student outcomes. https://t.co/wxAjOWu8uY

One recommendation to fix inequity in Australia is for the government to fund non-government schools to the same degree as government schools, while banning them from charging fees.

https://t.co/oa7N4Y9bfW Good on you @PiccoliMp ! Of course the Head of catholic schools rejected the idea out of hand.

A proposal by former education minister Adrian Piccoli to reduce segregation and disadvantage in schooling has been slammed by the leader of NSW Catholic schools.

Check out the website at https://t.co/XaCc6mQ4AT and have a play around with the variables. It’s a work in progress so we are interested in suggestions and ideas. @profholden @pasi_sahlberg

A new tool compares NAPLAN data by suburbs rather than by schools, and shows more money does not always lead to better outcomes.

One of the better pieces I’ve read on this issue

While the federal education minister calls for a 'back to basics' approach, an economics professor and a former NSW education minister argue our children need higher-order skills.

I quite like @PiccoliMp and @profholden's idea of significantly changing NAPLAN. It is a practical step to take towards dismantling the NAPLAN grip on our schools. It's certainly is doable, probably acceptable to data obsessed govts, and might even work. https://t.co/JFKRjFpqsY

@Jane_N_Mueller @PiccoliMp @profholden @smh What a great explanation. Even in year 4 my kids can do the basics in mathematics but on assessment tasks that require application through problem solving it becomes a challenge.

Have the warnings about NAPLAN ‘narrowing the curriculum’ and ‘teaching to the test’ come to pass where higher order skills tested by PISA have indeed been sidelined? Maybe instead of a ‘back to basics’ response it should be a ‘beyond the basics’ response.
