@Jane_N_Mueller @PiccoliMp @profholden @smh What a great explanation. Even in year 4 my kids can do the basics in mathematics but on assessment tasks that require application through problem solving it becomes a challenge.

‘We set the bar too low for ourselves if the main policy response to PISA is "back to basics". Australia needs to be more aspirational than to simply measure our system on how well our children read and write.’ @profholden @PiccoliMp via @smh

Have the warnings about NAPLAN ‘narrowing the curriculum’ and ‘teaching to the test’ come to pass where higher order skills tested by PISA have indeed been sidelined? Maybe instead of a ‘back to basics’ response it should be a ‘beyond the basics’ response.
