I'm a simple man. If I see a field trial of genetically-engineered trees, I read it. A recent preprint reports the largest field trial to-date of American Chestnut trees engineered to resist a blight. And the results look promising. For context: The U.S. was once filled with

The bottom 10% of students should not be going to UCSD (or any college for that matter), and the bottom 10% of UCSD students should not need a remedial course in elementary and middle school math.

IQ fanatics are apparently too dumb to get context. Math 2 is taken by ~700 out of nearly 9,000 freshman. Yes, it turns out if you take the bottom 10% of students, you will find terrible scores. There is nothing wrong with trying to educate the bottom tier of students!

Folks on our side often fail to appreciate that the Left, too, is locked in similarly tense internecine battles for control of The Message. These are heady times, and the fight should be welcomed. The growing pains, the infighting, the bloodlust: this is the only path through the

"For example, an academic paper I wrote with Lewis Halsey about sex differences in STEM sparked a minor online controversy and got me reported to my university’s DEI administrators." Funnily, just citing this paper in a paper of mine led to informal complaints against me.

The New York Times published an editorial with data claiming moderates win more, and progressive pundits raised a lot of (valid) flags about the methodologies they used. So I corrected for those, and the Times is still correct: moderates win more often. https://t.co/cDNFPVYQl2

The Indian basin MJO is typically an atmospheric angular momentum minimum because it typically follows a period of weak overall tropical convection (because the Western Hemisphere phases are associated with less overall tropical rainfall), which implies that the tropics are less

There is another aspect, though, that does tie to geography, the Pacific Ocean is the widest part of the world for a jet and westerlies to occur without intersecting with land masses and Mountain ranges. So, when a surge of angular momentum emerging from the tropics intersects

An MJO event that develops initially there without having gone through the Indian Ocean and Maritime Continent phases does increase atmospheric angular momentum, but it doesn't imply high angular momentum anomalies (it can just be increasing from a low level). It's just that on

There's a lot of discussion about atmospheric angular momentum. Most people don't understand why Indian Ocean MJO is associated with low angular momentum and Pacific MJO is associated with high. The mechanism is that convection near the equator spreads momentum from the

@santha75 La Nina actually is associated with low atmospheric angular momentum, and Pacific mjo is associated with high angular momentum.

Why are people still insisting that we give such ideologically driven absurdities the time of day? It makes people think the left doesn't care about what's actually true. We can treat Trans people with dignity but not let our brains fall out when we do it. There's a reasonable
