As we’re wrapping up Pollinator Month, let's remember that bees aren’t the only pollinating species. Flies, butterflies and moths are insect pollinators. Bats and birds, especially hummingbirds, are also pollinators, namely with night-blooming flowers and long, tubular flowers.

Did you know only female bees can sting? Ovipositors are long, straw-like structures some insects have and are used for laying eggs. As only females lay eggs, they’re the only ones with ovipositors and in turn, the only ones with stingers.

Many insects feed on flower nectar and protein. Nectar, which is basically sugar water, is a carbohydrate with trace amounts of amino acids and micronutrients. Pollen on the other hand, is a protein, and its makeup is different for each floral source.

Nebraska is home to a lot of cattle. While most cattle in Nebraska are beef cows, 49,000 are dairy cows, producing 1.2 billion pounds of milk in 2024. Now that’s a lot of milk!
