Spanish guards all had incredible vision and touch on their floaters. Rubio made some excellent reads in transition, including a big cross-court skip to Rudy that cut the game to 2 late. Spain’s feel for the game and understanding of how to counter US coverages made them great.

Dwyane Wade to me was the US’s most impactful player. He hardly missed from the field, he was in attack mode as a slasher from the jump, and he was super disruptive in the passing lanes. In both halves it was when he checked in that the US turned up the heat on Spain.

Kobe’s iconic shot at the end was even more impactful bc it fouled Fernandez out. He was giving the US major trouble with his shooting, slashing, and lob passing.

I didn’t like how whistle happy the officials were but towards the end I think they let more go and let the players decide the outcome. US didn’t need the PGs on the floor as often either, they were reduced to just bringing the ball across and serving as a floor spacer.

Just rewatched the 08 Gold Medal game and that has to be on a short list of greatest games ever played. Extremely physical contest, a ton of highlight sequences in transition, & some ridiculous shot-making. The US was scorching from 3 but Spain was very poised and hung around.

there’s a strong correlation between higher mid-range frequency & lower orb%. teams don’t get bent out of shape or put into a scramble nearly as much from it. i don’t think it matters for houston though, they have that many bigs/athletes with a nose for the ball. i like the model.

Last season the Suns were bottom 5 in ORB% while the Rockets ranked 1st. Typically rim pressure and/or bending the defense out of shape from the 3P line are the best ways to create ORB chances. I think Houston being that dominant in this area is essential w/ KD as your primary.
