Here’s an idea: why not just change the KS2 SATs reading test to a diagnostic assessment that actually produces useful information about each child – because newsflash: many children who score below 100 can read – rather than a blunt measure to judge primary schools with?
Too many pupils are disengaged after moving from primary to secondary school, leaving them without the skills they need for work and life. Our new Year 8 reading test will help teachers to spot struggling readers early and provide pupils with the support they need to achieve and

Agree with every point @FunkyPedagogy makes here. Everyone needs to read this 🧵
My thoughts on the @educationgovuk Y8 reading test proposal: - In the absence of any detail, or clear rationale thus far, it’s important not to immediately assume it’s going to be the end of the world. I’m inclined to be hopeful that there’s a focus here on secondary reading

A brilliant piece. More and more, we are working with the challenge that the definition of disadvantaged has warped. In practical terms, we should think disadvantage through the lens of learning: what barriers do students encounter and how do we work to remove these.

Thanks to @ChilternLT for inviting me to speak on balancing school support w independence in Y11 interventions. We explored: 1. NEAT: small and consistent 2. Independence over intervention 3. Short-term, high-impact actions No Ozempic fixes; just 100 things, 1% better!

For me, our best bet is the idea that we should tailor the modality (speech, text, gesture etc.) of our teaching to the needs of the CONTENT, rather than the preferences of our learners. Aka, the best medium for the message.

'Illiteracy is a policy choice' is a great line.
.@KelseyTuoc has penned a brilliant piece on the Southern Surge, and she had me at the headline: “Illiteracy is a policy choice.” Amen. Your must-read article for the week:

@englishspecial In contrast, what secondary schools really should be prioritising is finding out which pupils have basic decoding issues and which kids have grasped the basics of decoding but lack fluency, and then providing targeted support to these two groups. >>

A big reason we're seeing the problems we are today with reading and mental health can be explained by the fact that most 10-year-olds now own a smartphone. https://t.co/qplILY4HEp

Tommy Robinson: 'I challenge any journalist to come to Luton and find Muslims with non Muslims.' I'm a journalist from Luton and this man is talking utter nonsense. A pleasure to work on this film, chatting to incredible people in my hometown and separating fact from fiction.

If you're in leadership, one of your top priorities should be visibility. You need to be everything, everywhere, all at once. Get into lessons, hit the corridors, be there for your team and your students.
Must have done 50 plus laps of our school today. Conclusion? God, these people are good. #TALstaff 🙏💜
