only, that analogy doesnt work anymore because it relies on a fiction created by someone who is empowering the person threatening my life, in broad daylight, while people walked by and did nothing. The transphobia that harry potter enables is not unique, but it is insidious
i haven't talked much about the silvervale/ironmouse or whatever situation really so, let's talk about it. this will become a thread so my bad
What we have learned at large is something we already knew, the anime community that primarily makes up vtuber audiences is transphobic.
the reason we can say this with certainty is to look at the experiences with the anime community in r/animemes, I'm not sure if y'all use reddit but they banned the word trap there in 2020 and the community collectively lost their shit all at once.
this isn't unique to reddit, it's something that happens all over the place when someone threatens to remove something they hold dear for one reason or another. With silvervale, that was harry potter. I, like many others including her, really loved harry potter growing up
i was a ravenclaw and i got the scarf and the robe and hoodie and anything else, i went to midnight releases and i made a lot of friends from it, it was a huge part of my life and it always will be, there's nothing wrong with that. no one is angry you liked something in the past.
the difference though is that i moved past that enjoyment as i got older and was able to think critically about things, when i was being threatened on the street as i walked home for work because i didnt pass well enough, i thought back to being a "brave mublood being shunned"
it shows people that hold those views that successful people agree with them. support them. encourage them. the thing people aren't taking into account is the thousands of trans lives being impacted by this wave of trans hate in the vtubing community is directly inspired by
harry potter and jk rowling. yes, there are bad actors on both sides of this hurling death threats and doxxing people, but that doesnt mean we should condone either of those. it never is okay, trans people just have to see it a lot more often in their daily lives.
we have lived every day being thrown out of every safe space we have ever known, homes, schools, online it doesnt matter transphobia permeates it even in gay, lebian and bi-sexual spaces. so when we as trans content creators see the biggest voices of our community
playing a game that supports those messages, and supports that ideology it's really hard to not say to that person "i'm disappointed." because we are, we thought that the vtubing space was safe, we thought that we could trust the people who command hundreds of thousands of views
to support us in a very simple way, where even if you play the stupid wizard game, at least tell us our lives matter and that you support us. instead the issue is completely removed from the talking points, and it's just "im sorry i had to stream crying" and never
