a.o. ".. Aims to halve gas demand by 2030, yet .. exposure to global LNG markets suggest otherwise. The political rhetoric emphasises the high cost of gas, when the consequence of a successful transition would be to deepen and extend a likely period of lower gas prices. ... "
A new INET Working Paper by Yaroslav Melekh, James Dixon, Katrina Salmon, and Michael Grubb, interrogates the contradictions between fossil lock-in through LNG import capacity and overcontracting, and policy-driven demand reduction. https://t.co/ivtd03U0q2

The day after new UK govt states that approval of UK’s only coal mine development was unlawful, and end to any new O&G licences, glad to get lead letter in FT reinforcing economic basis for government action on decarbonisation globally. @UCL_ISR @ECIU_UK @climatestrat

Policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are effective, but more stringent regulations are needed to keep warming to the Paris temperature goals, finds new analysis by Ben Hinder & Prof @MichaelGrubb9 @UCL_Energy @TheBartlettUCL with @ethswitzerland

Some years ago I became convinced that risk-underwriting was key to the international climate finance we need. Took a lot longer to understand why the MDBs couldnt do it. Now at last we may have the chance, at scale. Great to get this in Friday's FT!
Fantastic new @FT piece from @MichaelGrubb9 @UCL_ISR on Norway's historic opportunity to put its windfall fossil fuel revenues to good use. Low- and middle-income countries badly need access to such finance to implement their sustainable development plans

Interesting statements & announcement from the UK Secretary of State. Whilst I disagree with the decision on oil & gas licences - I think a.o. time will illustrate why - its good to see this initiative and the framing around a more holistic view of security.
Good and serious stuff from Grant Shapps here. Encouraging to see the UK government taking a lead, even if very legitimate questions remain around how new oil and gas projects fit with global climate goals. https://t.co/WB3lmuG38Q

UK govt response to the CCC report frankly seemed irresponsible - glad the FT ran my reaction yesterday:

The energy crisis hugely increased the wholesale price of electricity. This article from @MichaelGrubb9 'tries to sort out where the revenues went' drawing on research into the structure of revenues to different types of generators.

... but also for the carbon price skeptics, a wonderful line from my IPCC colleague Shreekant: ".. I dont understand the debate. Price is not just an instrument to be compared with others. If prices dont reflect your objective/real costs, everything else will be harder.."

Soo tempting to dive in here (and thanks for pointing to Plan Econ). Just to add: (1) a target / emissions cap is not same as a price; tradeability may turn it into a price but that doesnt mean the price on its own is the most efficent element of delivery
Genuinely undecided on the 'dw its in the ETS' v 'need to do other stuff too' debate. The ETS only side seems convincing but its only right wingers and a guy yelling at people on here making that case

On LBC this morning, found myself saying if last year was gas crisis, this year could knock on to be electricity crisis. Good coverage from Bloomberg too of our report
bloomberg.com
The surge in wholesale electricity prices last year forced UK consumers to pay more than double the amount for power than they did before the crisis, according to a study by University College London.

And big thanks to Aldersgate group for support and a great launch meeting, including both the serving Minister and his counterpart for Labour opposition - wide interest in what needs to be done....

Wow. For anyone who thought a low carbon elec system would be just like a traditional on but with decarbonised generation, wake up. Same for those who thought we couldnt handle a lot of variability. This just a glimpse of future "integrated & intelligent" power systems...
I never get tired of these graphs. And the lessons staring us in the face for electricity market and economy wide energy policy 👇 Solar & wind to gas and back swings, with batteries handling the hard ramps …
