This was such a fun collaboration with Mafe (newly PhD'ed!). We were really able to combine our strengths and put together a cool story we are both excited about on this unexpected (but impossible to resist) project 😃.

Gosh marine animals are rad 😍.
Comb on over and sea the magnificent bloody belly comb jelly! A denizen of the deep, the bloody belly’s dark red coloration keeps it camouflaged from predators in the depths, where red light disappears and red-colored animals are nearly invisible.

Love the fly eye- frequently referred back to other excellent reviews by @FlyEyeLab during grad school to keep track of all the amazingly complex development going on in that beautiful tissue.

I’m grateful she was able to spend her final year with her family, who I know she loved dearly and missed greatly living in PA. Rest in peace, dear friend.

I was so excited when she accepted a faculty position at NCI, and I know how much she was looking forward to her (very bright) future. Her cancer diagnosis and move to CA to undergo chemo shortly after was absolutely devastating and came at the cruelest time.

Anyone who knew her also knows she was incredibly fun and could make anyone laugh, whether it was at her annual St. Patrick’s Day breakfast, a genetics retreat, or just hanging out in lab or OCSC.

More than anyone I’ve met, Deirdre had such a passion for her work and for science in general. Whether you worked on something similar to her or not, she was happy to talk about it and usually had insightful suggestions.

I have many fond memories from the 2 ½ years we were both in Philly, going to concerts and restaurants on the weekends and meeting for mid-week lunches to talk about work and life.

I met Deirdre in grad school, where she welcomed me into the @DuronioLab and was a constant source of enthusiasm and joy. Later, I was fortunate to follow her footsteps and start at postdoc at UPenn.

I love the Bloomington Stock Center- receiving flies was always like Christmas 😊. Truly truly a wonderful thing for fly folks, and heartwarming to read about the amazing people working there!.
OMG--the Bloomington Drosophila Stock Center gets well deserved recognition from the @nytimes . Go Kevin Cook and colleagues, powering basic science around the world. Fly folks and friends please RT!!!!.
