The final years of the Gaddafi regime saw leading architects (including Zaha Hadid and Norman Foster) take on major projects in Libya that were never realised. The story of the planned Museum of Conflict (architect’s image below) in Tripoli is particularly ironic. 1/3

London architectural firm Metropolitan Workshop won the competition to design the Museum of Conflict. “Located in Tripoli’s planned green belt, near the People’s Congress Hall, the building provides an opportunity to significantly transform this part of Tripoli,” it said.

“The design is inspired by tented structures used by the Bedouin and will house permanent and special exhibitions providing a unique platform to showcase Libya’s national story to local and international audiences and educate future generations on the price of conflict.”

This 2008 piece on the planned Museum of Conflict written by the Guardian’s architectural critic ended thus: “Work is due to start next year and the project is to be completed by 2011 in time for Libya's hopefully peaceful 60th anniversary.”

@MaryFitzger Many Gaddafi era projrcts were dictated by political/foreign factors, his state of mind and patronage. The viability or usefulness of such schemes was not in consideration. Libyans continue to pay the price for his follies.

@MaryFitzger Yeah I remember that particular architect , because its poster was on my way from home- downtown , I wished to see it manifested in reality though I knew deep inside that the regime is hopeless. I wonder what reminded you of that, cuz I can't see the occasion .
