@MartinKnight_ Didn’t we appoint a Minister for Drought in 1976? Denis Howell. I seem to recall within days we were deluged.

@MartinKnight_ A vague feeling of heat over a continuous period is more reliable than carefully collected and verified data. Everyone was happy when I was young and yet, apparently, Leslie Whittle was left to die in a drain

@slopingpitch Yes, it’s sad how people forget. They even spell her name wrongly sometimes.

@MartinKnight_ I went to see The Who on Whitsun Bank Holiday at the end of May 1976 at Charlton and it rained. The next time it rained was the August Bank Holiday, so they're probably right about September not having 30 degrees for days in a row before.

@MartinKnight_ No, you’ve just misremembered it. The heatwave was over by the end of August.

@MartinKnight_ Sees a news report showing something as fact….. Doubts it, but doesn’t google it, because he sort-of remembers (wrongly as it turns out) that it might have been warm in September almost 50 years ago. Pilock.

@MartinKnight_ We didn’t have climate change then, it was the good old days when weather was just weather, natures gift whatever it was.
