As a resource, check out this thread &/or contribute with a literary magazine/journal & the link/guidelines.
Good luck submitting!
Literary Twitter is great, but don’t feel bad if you’re not always announcing a publication, a residency, an award, an agent, a book deal—because it’s really okay to just be writing, to just be reading, to just be sharing each other’s work.
If you are an educator, you should be teaching living writers.
So, here is a thread with some of our favorite contemporary writers, including their published works.
Please contribute, share, and actually use this resource in your classrooms.
🎉 HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY 🎉
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve dreamed of becoming an author, & today, that dream finally came true.
My debut memoir, THE IN-BETWEENS (
@WVUPRESS
), is officially published today.
I am overwhelmed with joy & fear & deep gratitude.
Undoubtedly, Black women writers are some of the best writers today. Black women writers are publishing some of the best poetry & prose today. Black women writers are changing literary publishing today.
Who are some of your favorite Black women writers, emerging & established?
🎉 I am overjoyed to announce a publishing dream that has finally come true.

I never thought this dream would happen, but I still always believed it would.
For seven years, I’ve submitted to a literary magazine.
Tomorrow, they will publish my essay.
So wherever you are in this literary thing, don’t stop writing, don’t stop submitting, and don’t stop believing in your work.
I’ve always dreamed of becoming an author, dreamed of writing books & telling stories. Today that dream came true, & I can officially announce that I am represented by literary agent superstar,

Read it here,
Literary Twitter is great, but don’t feel bad if you’re not always announcing a publication, a residency, an award, an agent, a book deal—because it’s really okay to just be writing, to just be reading, to just be sharing each other’s work.
Don’t stop submitting to that dream literary mag. Don’t stop pitching that dream literary agent. Don’t stop, above all else, believing that your work, that your writing, that your voice matters.
🎉NEWS🎉
My literary dreams✨are happening in real-time, and I don't know what to do.
My dream lit mag accepted my essay, and part of me never thought I'd say that—say that my work is published here—and yet, but part of me always knew I would.
So, don't ever stop submitting.
Big News!!
I am SO excited to announce that I am officially an Assistant Features Editor
@The_Rumpus
starting today.
Thank you,
@marisasaystweet
and the entire Rumpus team, for this opportunity.
I cannot wait to read your work.
Editing at a literary magazine is one of my greatest inspirations for writing & not because I want to publish more but because your work indefinitely moves me—moves me to write better, to write deeper, to write more honestly, & so, I’m always reading submissions
@The_Rumpus
❤️
My debut memoir, THE IN-BETWEENS, a biracial coming-of-age story, was published this February by
@WVUPRESS
, and as of today, I have officially earned out of my advance.
I am so, so grateful.
🎉 In 2023, read more books by Black writers, books by women writers, books by indigenous writers, books by Latinx writers, books by Asian writers, books by queer writers, books by trans writers, books by disabled writers, books by writers other than writers who look like you.
@TaylorByas3
& I are BIPOC editors at The Rumpus, a literary magazine that prioritizes BIPOC writers & other marginalized voices.
If you’re a BIPOC editor or reader, please share where, what literary journal/magazine, etc.
This will be such a significant resource for so many.
I’m grateful for the editors who read submissions—who read submissions for free, who are also working multiple jobs, who have a family, who have a partner, who have pets—who have a responsibility to a world much other than the literary world, so thank y’all for everything you do.
No one is going to believe in your writing more than you will—so wherever you are in this literary thing: published/unpublished, MFA/no MFA, agent/no agent, book deal/book in-progress, established author/emerging—wherever you are, just don’t give up, just don’t stop writing.
Y’all...if YOU got a piece published & it doesn’t get a lot of LIKES or RETWEETS, just remember YOU wrote something beautiful & YOU were brave to submit it & YOU will touch some reader’s heart that YOU’VE never met & YOU will pass on that courage, that vigor to share our stories.
CONTACT WRITERS BEFORE YOU ANNOUNCE CONTEST WINNERS.
WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING?
JUST SEND AN EMAIL BEFORE TWEETING.
(speaking on behalf of a friend & too many other writers)
One of the greatest things you can do is write something—write something very poorly, and read it, and reread it, and then rewrite it, and read it more, and rewrite it again, and maybe share it with someone—or maybe no one, but write something—just write anything today.
I’ve been pitching a literary magazine for years now.
They finally accepted my pitch.
I just sent them the draft.
I want you to know that you have to keep trying, keep writing, keep pitching, keep submitting, and keep believing, most of all, that your work matters.
Many of my high school students have never read any Asian writers before, & I’d like to change that, if it’s
#AAPIHeritageMonth
or any day after.
Asian writers are American writers & also so, SO much more.
Contribute to this thread with your favorite pieces by Asian writers.

Black writers, please tweet one of your favorite pieces you’ve published this year.
Non-Black writers, read those poetry & prose pieces published by Black writers & then teach their work & buy their books & retweet this thread & retweet their essays & stories & poems.
✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
Marginalized writers must publish the best book of their lives to receive coverage & praise, while non-marginalized writers continue to publish mediocracy & are overwhelmingly deemed notable, bestseller, & literary.
🎉 PRE-ORDER 🎉

I was told to "move on" from my memoir because it's 18 months old & my sales are down & the continuance of marketing my book is over.
However, I will never stop sharing my work because my story of being in between race, identity, & culture is still & always will be important.
We rarely have second chances in publishing. But I am a testament that if you believe in your work, people will believe in you.
I am honored to announce
@WVUPRESS
is publishing a new version of my memoir, THE IN-BETWEENS, a lyrical collection about race and culture.
More soon.
I published an essay on Blackness, breakdancing, & my daughter
@CatapultStory
.
Today, I discover my essay is a notable in the Best American Essays ‘22 anthology.
Thank you
@arriwrites
&
@ortile
for editing this essay, which is available in my memoir, The In-Betweens,
@WVUPRESS
.
I am SO excited to officially announce that I am reading creative nonfiction submissions
@The_Rumpus
!
Please send us your best lyrical essays.
For what I'm looking for, ⬇️❤️
#RumpusEssays
@LoebDavon
loves "lyric essays that are both poetic and essayistic. Think Ross Gay, Paul Lisicky, Tyrese Coleman, and Bryan Washington. Writing that blends individual and universal storytelling. BIPOC and LGBTQ+ writers preferred.”
@The_Rumpus
#RumpusEssays
@The_Rumpus
is open for essay submissions from now through March 1st, so send us your work!
As one of the editors, I am interested in braided narratives & flash essays by marginalized voices, in writing that is narratively & introspectively driven.
With so many great literary magazines shutting down, I am grateful to read your essay submissions
@The_Rumpus
.
The Rumpus is open for prose and book review submissions.
❤️Send us your best work❤️
More book lists and reviews and author interviews for university and indie presses—for these books and these authors are just as anticipated, noteworthy, and should be celebrated.
If you have a book forthcoming that’s either university or indie published, please share it here.
🎉Officially, the page proofs to my forthcoming memoir, The In-Betweens, are submitted to West Virginia University Press 🎉!
My lyrical collection, a biracial coming-of-age journey of a boy from Black and Jewish families, will be published with
@WVUPRESS
in February 2023.
I hope an editor is reading your submission. I hope an agent is reading your query. I hope someone, whoever they are—whoever it is that needed your story, your poem, your essay—I hope that they are reading your beautiful piece of writing right now.
Rather than Black Friday shopping, preorder books.
If you have a book forthcoming and it is available for preorder, please share the link.
Let’s make today’s consumerism about consuming books instead.
I’ve been submitting to this literary magazine since 2015. After 7 years, I can finally call this lit mag a home for my writing. So if anything, keep reading, keep writing, & keep submitting your work.
There is so much pressure to be publishing all the time. Literary Twitter is like a feed of constant good news: announcements, book deals, agent signings—but it is important to remember that we are presenting our best selves, & it is absolutely okay to do nothing literary today.
The Big 5 publishing houses are great—but shout out to the university presses that are changing publishing—presses that are celebrating diverse and marginalized authors, and are, as
@MargaretRenkl
said, "University presses are keeping American Literature alive," like
@WVUPRESS
.
I'm so hyped for my essay to come out tomorrow at Catapult. It's about breakdancing, Blackness, and fatherhood.
I might not be able to move like I used to, but I can still land a backflip🤣!
🎉 I am overjoyed to hold the advance reading copy of my debut memoir, The In-Betweens, forthcoming from
@wvupress
in February 2023!
Thank you
@Paul_Lisicky
and
@aimeenez
for your beautiful blurbs.
I hope you receive your ARC too.
More soon! 🎉
In 2021, I struggled to publish any new writing.
In 2022, my publishing dreams are happening in real time, and I just don’t know what to do.
My year in publishing, a thread.
Nothing published today, didn’t win any contests, no acceptances or rejections to announce, no new reviews of my book or an interview of any kind—but today, I‘m grateful for this community, thankful for YOUR work, for YOUR support—blessed that OUR writing has brought US together.
CONSIDER THIS: what if literary magazines & journals that had calls for, specifically, BIPOC writers actually staffed BIPOC editors & readers on their mastheads?
Who has a book forthcoming in 2022-2023?
What’s the title? What’s it about? Who’s publishing it?

My memoir, The In-Betweens, (

What I love most about editing essays
@The_Rumpus
is that we give the same level of readership and consideration to established and emerging writers.
❤️ We’re open for submissions ❤️
🎉 I’m so thrilled to have celebrated the release of my debut memoir, THE IN-BETWEENS (

I wish good news on you & to everyone & everything you love ❤️✨

THE IN-BETWEENS is a biracial coming-of-age journey about a boy from Black & Jewish families.
Thanks for the support, y’all! ❤️
Getting a piece accepted in a lit mag is great. Editing at a lit mag is great. Signing with a lit agent is great. Acquiring a publishing deal is great. But one of my most important goals is to mentor young & emerging writers, & this is something that is all too often overlooked.
I am overwhelmed with joy to share my essay, "Breakdancing Shaped Who I Am As a Black Man & Father" published
@CatapultStory
today.
Thank you
@arriwrites
for editing & helping me see the tenderness in my story.
Georgie Kate, I love you & this is for you.
