Linking back to our previous work showing null links between ethnic outgroups and pathogen-related xenophobia, these results call for a reconsideration of how BIS shapes intergroup interactions in real-world contexts. [6/7]

We also explored how immigrant attributes influenced attitudes. People favored immigrants from poorer backgrounds, who behaved prosocially, and embraced local norms. More interestingly, cultural distance to the Netherlands had little impact on these preferences. [5/7]

We decomposed between- and within-person variations in disgust sensitivity and disease concerns and analyzed how these predicted anti-immigrant attitudes. Only stable individual differences in disgust sensitivity were relevant. [4/7]

While explicit disease concerns fluctuated throughout the pandemic, we found no changes in pathogen disgust sensitivity or anti-immigrant sentiments. [3/7]

We rigorously tested the Behavioral Immune System (BIS) hypothesis, which predicts that heightened infectious disease salience triggers xenophobia as a defensive mechanism. Surprisingly, our findings suggest this was not the case during COVID-19 in the Netherlands. [2/7].

Some personal notes: this S1 is the first study I conducted at the @VUSocialPsych, and this paper might be the last published while still affiliated here. I want to thank my coauthors and colleagues, also the reviewers and editor for their supports. Much love to all! [7/7]

Anger is related to both direct and indirect aggression, whereas disgust associated only to indirect ones. Anger is more sensitive to relationships than moral disgust. This may result from a tradeoff between the benefits and costs of aggression in moral contexts. [7/8].

These results offer new insights into the functional account of moral emotions and punishments. Simply classifying victims as friends or foes isn't enough to fully understand moral reactions. [6/8].

Additional highlights include using a stimulus sampling approach for moral violation vignettes and employing more ecologically valid and inclusive measurements of direct and indirect aggression motives. [5/8].

Second, we advanced the measurement of emotions. We moved beyond traditional methods - verbal labels or single-array face ratings. In Study 2, we combined facial and non-verbal vocal expressions for more reliable multi-item multi-modal assessments of anger and disgust. [4/8]

First, we approached relationships differently. Prior research mostly relied on folk categories - self, relatives, etc. We instead focused on WTR in our project and observed its effects on emotions and aggression, both within and beyond these categories. [3/8]

Conclusion first: The value of victims is more strongly related to anger than to disgust, and more to direct than indirect aggression. Anger, rather than disgust, correlates more with direct than indirect aggression. This aligns with prior literature, but what's new here? [2/8]
