Nico Sturm went through a few jersey number ideas. 7-8 were taken, and he opted against his college No. 17 because it belonged to Tyson Jost, the player he was traded for.
His younger brother came up with 78. It’s the year his hometown team was founded, so its a nice tribute.
What’s Kraken, guys? Very excited to announce I’m joining the
@SeaTimesSports
team and will be starting soonish. For the time being I’m focused on wrapping up the Avalanche regular season for
@denvergazette
.
Donato in for Kuhlman tonight against the Penguins. No Shane Wright. His grandparents were in town for the week/three-game homestand and won’t get to see him play.
Josh Manson says he has to start being more selective about telling Cale Makar when he makes a good play because there are so many. Said he was laughing at himself on the bench.
Andre Burakovsky said he wants to play more with added responsibility in Seattle.
“When I was in Washington, I was kind of behind Ovi, Backstrom, Oshie, (Kuznetsov) and all those guys. When I came to Colorado, I was kind of in the shadow of MacKinnon, Landeskog and Rantanen.
Nathan MacKinnon is not in a position where he’ll play in the All-Star Game, Bednar said. He’s focused on getting back to the Avalanche after the break. He had surgery on his nose, coach says.
Tye Kartye found out he made the Kraken right before the team meeting and took some ribbing from the veterans.
“I tried to walk in all serious, but I couldn’t keep the smile off my face.”
Hakstol on the Kraken’s well-established third line, Bjorkstrand-Gourde-Tolvanen:
“Half the time, they’re fighting like cats and dogs. Like they’re brothers. But it works for them.”
Vince Dunn will not play tonight in Winnipeg, Dave Hakstol says. He’ll go home with the team for further evaluation. He left the game following this hit from Calgary’s Martin Pospisil.
sooo Michael Bublé and Jack Whitehall are at Kraken practice with a camera crew, taking pictures with fans. Hearing Bublé is playing himself in a mockumentary-style movie and he’ll be at the game later tonight as well.
O’Connor on Byram, who remains on personal leave: “You sort of put the hockey side of things away.”
“We’re all thinking about him and try to keep in touch as much as we can.”
In four games with the Kraken, Tatar has exceeded his goal output in 27 games in Colorado. Playing 16+ minutes on Beniers' line certainly doesn't hurt.
Not bad for Beniers either - he has a goal and four assists in his past three games.
Alex Newhook on getting his 21st birthday goal called back, then scoring another that counted: "I like to think the hockey gods might have had something to do with that there."
Avalanche announce Kurtis MacDermid has been signed to a two-year deal through 2023-24.
Sakic, from release: “Kurtis has done everything we’ve asked of him this season. He brings toughness and versatility to our lineup.”
Avalanche road trip updates, from Bednar:
- Bowen Byram will go, still not planning on him playing
- Artturi Lehkonen can’t cross into Canada without papers, but they’re hoping that will be resolved this weekend
- Jack Johnson is sick and didn’t skate today but expected to travel
Avs' J.T. Compher on the women's U18 worlds: "It's just unfortunate to see it being cancelled instead of rescheduled. It’s a tough time we’re living in right now where things aren’t going according to plan..."
Jack Johnson on staying safe this holiday season/being highly relatable: “Honestly I avoid people in my normal life so it was nothing out of the ordinary.”
The Kraken are moving on.
Seattle wins Game 7 and advances past the defending Stanley Cup champions on two goals from Oliver Bjorkstrand and 33 saves from Philipp Grubauer. 2-1 final.
We're headed to Dallas for Round 2.
Something to watch: the Kraken have expressed interest in a public/private partnership for the construction of an ice arena in Kirkland. Sept. 2026 is a target date.
Andrew Cogliano has a list of Avalanche players he already knows, including Jack Johnson. They were roommates at Michigan and got along fine.
“It’s nice to now rekindle our time in Michigan together and get to know him better now, as we’ve grown up.”
Out tonight: MacKinnon, Jack Johnson (COVID protocol), Landeskog (suspension), Nichushkin (upper-body injury), Toews (UBI), Francouz (LBI). Options: Megna, Matteau, Sikura. How is it only Game 2.
Philipp Grubauer: “Personally...I don’t know what to say. It means a lot, ending their season and beating the defending Stanley Cup champions.
“Lots more to come for our group, but it’s only Series 1."
Tyson Jost to the Minnesota Wild for Nico Sturm.
Talked to Jost in Carolina. He said this season had been up-and-down for him. He hoped to play himself into a bigger role.
"I know I’ll get there one day, I’ve just gotta keep working at it."
Bednar described three "game-breaking" plays from Valeri Nichushkin tonight. "It looked like he tried to take the game over by himself in the third period and I thought he did."
“Anything Eminem” makes Cale Makar want to run through a brick wall, according to a video they just showed. Most surprising turn of events today, doesn’t matter who scores what.
After someone yelled “How ‘bout dem apples?” three times in a row, someone shut the door to the inner rooms of the Kraken’s locker area. Can’t have anyone stealing that motivational speech.
Daccord: "ASU took a chance on me. They were the only school that offered me a scholarship.
"I committed here without ASU ever having played a Div. I hockey game. To look back on it, it was kind of nuts. But it all worked out."
McCann set to move to C in place of Alex Wennberg, held out due to "trade-related issues."
Hakstol: "It's an adjustment he has the ability to make. He’ll make that adjustment tonight and I’m sure he’ll do a good job of it."
Looks like Tatar will rejoin Seattle's top line vs CGY.
