podcast! The Lakers reportedly have a trade ready for Donovan Mitchell if he won't extend with Cleveland. Is he worth a Godfather offer? Plus, more coaching search details!

JaVale, on telling Caruso to wear the headband: "I just had a vision. And when I saw that vision of what he could be, visually, I made it happen. I told him to get the haircut, also. Haircut. Headband. What happened? He went out there and flew. Like the eagle that he is." AK
The Lakers lost their four games to Denver last season by a combined 24 points. This year, by a combined 22. People can be snarky all they want, but these series have been legitimately competitive. AK
What’s so ironic and frustrating about Kyrie and folks like him buying these conspiracies is how they “learn” all this shit through social media while on their phones, both of which actually *do* serve as tracking and monitoring agents. AK
So the Lakers gave up a first to get Schröder... then tried their damndest to overpay him... the failure of which directly led to the Westbrook trade... and now have Schröder on a vet min and are debating whether to bleed more firsts to move Russ. That's a 30 for 30, man. AK
.
@MagicJohnson
says the Lakers could’ve had DeRozan, Hield and Caruso instead of Westbrook 👀
"If you sign DeRozan, you only trade Kuzma for Buddy Hield, we would be playing in the Western Conference championship this year with those two guys."
At the risk of immodesty, I am an expert on Lakers Twitter. And I can say with 100 percent certainty that the last thing Lakers Twitter wanted was Pat Bev even attempting to score 30. AK

A reminder: Acknowledging that the Lakers gave up a lot for Anthony Davis isn’t the same thing as saying they gave up too much. You’re supposed to give up a lot. He’s Anthony (bleeping) Davis. AK
The Lakers are better now than yesterday, but to me, the best part of all of these moves is they’re actually in a position to retain quality role players and build some continuity for next year, as opposed to reshuffling vet min guys. This could be actual team-building. AK
"We have no have room for error. This is one of the best games we've played all year, and to have it fall on somebody's else's judgment, or non-judgement, is just ridiculous." - LeBron, on the potentially game-winning missed foul against him on the last play vs. Boston. AK
Disgraceful showing by the Clippers, who need to make a strong statement by firing Ty Lue. In a way that's deeply disrespectful and unprofessional. I'd even cap it by publicly daring him to take a job with the Lakers. Goad him all the way to El Segundo. That would show fans! AK
Seeing some “Anthony Davis’ dad is a hypocrite on loyalty” reactions. Do people really not see the difference between Boston trading IT on the heels of playing through his sister’s death & injury and AD wanting out after giving New Orleans 7 seasons to make tangible progress? AK
The Nets, minus Durant, Harden and Kyrie, are down 29 heading into the fourth quarter against Utah. It leads one to believe if you remove all of a team’s elite talent and make them rely purely on role players, the team turns demonstrably worse. AK
The Lakers have never won a championship without a dominate big, even if you include Andrew Bynum they lost the year he was out. Tell me its not a thing. I've been watching Lakers since Wilt, its always the big for us and the lakers don't have one...Andrea Drummond anyone...
As the old saying goes, “If you want the opposing star to keep his shoes on, don’t get beat down to the point where he can give them away to local children without worrying they might still come in handy.” BK
The Lakers were ultimately the better team, and this was pretty evident from the start. But it shouldn't go under the radar that Darvin Ham had a really good series as a coach. Nice adjustments on both sides of the ball, solved questions as they arose. AK
The basketball achievements make it a no-brainer, but the Lakers could have retired Pau's jersey just based on the way he's looked after Kobe's family. AK
I don’t care how big a Laker fan you are. If you can’t appreciate and respect what these Clippers pulled off this season, you’re taking a rivalry that’s not really a rivalry way too seriously. AK
A pattern I've noticed all season. Whenever Max Christie makes a nice play, Stu Lantz and Billy Mac will praise him in a way that sounds, and perhaps this is just me actively hearing what mirrors my opinion, like respectful lobbying for him to get more minutes. AK
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope went from "Klutch Tax" punchline to catching constant hell from Laker fans to arguably the third best player on a championship team. His four years in L.A. were a roller coaster, but on balance, a nice redemption story. AK
Interesting point from LeBron during the
@SpectrumSN
postgame interview with
@LakersReporter
. He said when he's at center defensively, he's able to call out coverages to teammates very early, alluding to his ability to recognize looks and sets. AK
Feel free to disown all your Nikes over Kaepernick if you’re that angry, but anybody who burns those Nikes rather than donate them to an organization that helps veterans in need doesn’t really give much thought towards their purported pet cause. AK
Shannon Brown entered the league in October 2006 as a rookie teammate of LeBron James. 16-ish years later, LeBron is playing with Shannon's younger brother Sterling. Amazing. AK
Bad job reading the room. Yes, the season is a marathon, but the Lakers also didn’t just get a 10-game winning streak snapped. They’re regressing. And saying “I’m tired of people living and dying with every game we play” is essentially chiding passion, intentionally or not. AK
Trevor Ariza alluded to being heavily recruited by Russell Westbrook to join the Lakers, but he said ultimately the biggest recruiters were his kids, who preferred him be home again. AK
Perhaps I’m a cynic, but when Magic says “I’m not a guy who holds grudges” as he sits on ‘First Take’ airing the Lakers’ dirty laundry on the same day they’re about to introduce the coach he didn’t hire... I don’t think I believe him. AK
On one hand, West is undoubtedly one of the five most important Lakers of all-time. That's not even debatable. On the other hand, it's a silly list Jeanie made off the top of her head while on the spot. Lighten up, Jerry. AK
Basketball legend Jerry West is insulted at being left off Jeanie Buss' list of the top five

Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving is opting into his $37 million player option for the 2022-23 season,

Say what you will about the Lakers potentially on the verge of getting swept, but at least you can't accuse them of not putting up their best fight along the way. AK
With all the focus about whether Dillon Brooks is poking the wrong bear with LeBron, it's flown under the radar how Desmond Bane clearly should have kept his mouth regarding Rui. AK
On behalf of all media, I'd like to apologize for our role in creating a villainous image of Dillon Brooks, self-proclaimed "bear poker," who led the NBA in techs, dresses like a classic WWE heel, and called LeBron James "old." Moving forward, we must do better. AK
Dillon Brooks, speaking after practice today, said he thinks the perception of him influenced the flagrant 2 call in Game 3. “The media making me a villain, the fans making me a villain, that just creates another persona on me.”
Obviously disappointing, but at least Denver is a hard team for Laker fans to dislike. Genuinely talented. Paid dues as a group. Jokic is incredible. Murray overcame a terrible injury. KCP is a former Laker champ. Best team in the conference all year. Not much to hate there. AK
Honestly, this is the wrong year for schadenfreude from Lakers fans towards the Clippers. That team played its ass off all season, and got the absolute most out of itself while missing their stars. They were everything the Lakers refused to even try to be. AK
In every deep playoff run, there are at least a couple games a team wins where it's kinda hard to figure out how. This was one of those, and a great sign for the Lakers. Really did just keep grinding through. BK
Thinking more about the Lakers' win tonight, I can't recall a single instance where it felt like they took a possession off. Not one. That rarely happens. Even in playoff games. This was as hard as I've ever seen a team play for 48 minutes. AK
One important factor in this win. This wasn’t a case of Milwaukee either taking the Lakers lightly or inexplicably crapping the bed. The Bucks didn’t play badly. At all. The Lakers simply played better. AK
My guess at the lineups:
LeBron
KCP
Matthews
Davis
Gasol
Schröder
Caruso
Kuzma
Keef
Harrell
On balance, the Lakers may have sacrificed some defense, but upgraded in offense and overall talent. Given the context and needs of the 2021 season, that’s the correct call.
AK
I love LeBron leaving for the locker room early in the wake of a forty-point, series-clinching win. That man is thinking about nothing other than bedtime. AK
If I'm Mike Budenholzer, I would immediately pop by the Bucks facility under the guise of "I accidentally left some personal items there a while back," and then just stroll aimlessly through the hallways, making sure everyone sees me. AK
"Man, if we get one training camp under our belt with this group, the sky's the limit. With that being said, we don't have a training camp under our belt, and the sky's still the limit." - D'Angelo Russell, talking with

after the game. AK
It’s not gonna get the same oxygen, because the Lakers are the Lakers and Russell Westbrook is Russell Westbrook, but this situation between the Suns and Ayton feels easily as bad, if not actually quite worse. AK
It's gotta be surreal for Stanley Johnson to go from out of the league last December to the guy who assisted LeBron James to reach
#2
on the all-time scoring list. AK
Kawhi should make his announcement by sitting at a podium with three apples in front of him, each marked “Lakers,” “Clippers,” or “Raptors,” then use a knife and fork to eat the apple of the team he’s joining. AK
The Lakers obviously still have a tough road ahead of them and remain one injury away from another round of adversity, but this new roster is legit. That's beyond doubt now. AK
For much of this game, the Warriors outplayed the Lakers, but I don't think they necessarily played all that well, either. Which made them vulnerable. It's been a hallmark of these Lakers, even during the low points of the season, to never give up. That shone through tonight. AK
Patrick Beverley simultaneously standing up for Austin Reaves and getting himself ejected in a game where he's got 0 points and is -17. That's the very definition of a teammate sacrificing for the greater good. AK
The Lakers turned the ball over 20 times, yet won by double digits. They're still in a fight, and can't afford many losses, but the roster is now in a place where damn near mistake-free basketball is no longer necessary to win games. That's a huge shift on the season. AK
We had to say goodbye today to Bobo, our sweet, handsome boy who looked like James Garner. He was in a state of steady cognitive decline, and despite everything we tried, there was no alleviating his increasing confusion, anxiety and fear. He’ll be very missed. AK
