We have a population 5x that of Cuba. That we can’t train enough doctors to meet the needs of our own population is not a cause for celebration. And the whole razzmatazz-drum-majorettes feel of this photo op is downright weird during a global pandemic. What’s really going on?

Cuban doctors leaving their country enroute to #SouthAfrica to assist us in the fight against #covid19 . The @GovernmentZA will welcome these selfless internationalist tonight to our shores. These doctors will be subjected to #covid19 health precautionary measures. 📸 @SABCNews

@JustineLimLaw It’s always a function of political decision making, and Cuba has had 60 years of deliberate policy focused on health provision to its citizens. On the razzmatazz, that happened in Italy too. Solidarity is something to celebrate, especially at these times, no?

@JustineLimLaw SA does not allow for privately trained doctors. The numbers of doctors would have been much better if private facilities and hospitals were allowed to train doctors.

@JustineLimLaw It's nostalgic distraction. @MYANC loves taking peoples minds back to the romantic days when they were freedom fighters and before the party enabled wholesale looting of the country.

@JustineLimLaw Thr key issue is not whether we can train doctors? We are losing many doctors through emigration! Imagine if all those in Canada, UK, Australia etc were around! I read about unemployed doctors in the country due to budgets. If this is the case, then no need for Cubans.

@JustineLimLaw @Unathi_Kwaza Apart from celebrating this modern Slavery we every turn down 1000's of young South Africans from entering the medical field because of their skin colour + refuse to register SA doctors qualified overseas

@JustineLimLaw @Unathi_Kwaza We can. Unfortunately they don’t use academic performance as the benchmark to who gets to study, so failure rates are way up.

@JustineLimLaw Cuba didn’t have many ways of earning foreign currency so they embarked on a strategy to have a over supply of doctors and engineers. They now export to earn foreign currency, some of these doctors have worked all year the world.

@JustineLimLaw It was a great excuse for Govt to put some cash into SAA by paying for yet another chartered flight, probably at massively inflated prices. An SAA Airbus A340 was sent to fetch them.

@JustineLimLaw Yes, also there are SA trained doctors and Cuban doctors. Ours are international sought after (for obvious reasons) , and Cuban doctors sought after only by a small band of ANC Comrade Cadres.
