On Christmas Eve, at dinner, I sat next to one of SA’s most influential business men.
He told me he had been funding university students for over a decade.
The number of those graduates who had thanked him? 0. Zero. Not one.
Who gets a free education and doesn’t say thank you?
@JustineLimLaw
Who said we are raising a generation of decent respectful people? Yes we are focusing on education but i think most people today lack basic decency and respect. In the workplace .. lots of well educated folks.. but the lack of respect and decency is common!
@JustineLimLaw
What does he expect? A pat on the back? Or those recipients to throw themselves at his feet in humble supplication? We have all been beneficiaries of scholarships set up by people dead/alive: the condition was never to write thank you letters or the like, condition was to pass!
@JustineLimLaw
Did you ask him what kind of "thank you" was he referring to? Just the words or someone actually doing something for him? That's a different story.🤔
@JustineLimLaw
While that’s very sad indeed. Most benefactors don’t want to be known and live by the “Magnificent Obsession”. It would however speak to one’s character to try and find someone to thank for such an enduring gift.
@JustineLimLaw
And from what I've heard from students; the ones standing in the queues for free education, are the ones with the most expensive cars, smart phones and Rolex watches.
@JustineLimLaw
Entitlement permeates "born free" parasites. But they don't excel like Judge Zondo on an Indian shopkeeper's beneficence. What will they do to SA?
@JustineLimLaw
Been to quite a few weddings of young relatives. All get gifts via " bridal registries ." I've never had one thank you note. Is that out of fashion nowadays?
@JustineLimLaw
I would hope they are paying it forward. That would give our country hope. Sadly I doubt it based on the lack of gratitude. PS this tweet does not specify that the funder expected a thank you, merely that he did not get one
