THE BETRAYAL OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER, an elegy for Taíno Cacica Anacaona, who was hanged by the Spanish in 1504, whereupon she and the residents of her village were burned. Each line of the poem follows the vowel progression of her final words (the poem's final line):
