Is the guy who held up a chainsaw to celebrate his demolition of programs that save babies' lives for tiny, tiny amounts of money relative to the U.S. annual budget correct that because someone is childless they lack some basic understanding of human goodness or purpose...?
@jessesingal Is he wrong in either take, though, my man?

Just to clarify my argument: There is a strain of (in my opinion) delusional thinking about AI on the left. Part of what frustrates me about this is that the left is where meaningful pushback on behalf of the newly jobless is going to come from. I'm saying that *within this
@jessesingal Aside from coining the term "stochastic parrot", Emily Bender is just one commentator in this space and I'm not sure how it got decided that her views are interchangeable with "the left." Gary Marcus is probably a more influential voice in pointing out the technical limitations

Standing in downtown Truckee at 5,817 feet and this is where the Sierra snowfall story really comes into focus. This storm is measured in feet, not inches: Higher elevations of the High Sierra: 6+ feet Donner Pass (7,056 ft): 5 to 6 feet Soda Springs (6,752 ft): 4 to 5 feet

@jessesingal I support Israel, but if you ever catch yourself calling an entire ethnic group "rabid dogs" then you need to log off and do some self reflection. That level of dehumanization is never okay and comes from a dark place.

I'm far from an experienced West Coast skier but I think I... have just never ever seen a forecast like this before? It looks like a typo.

Donner Pass, which is how Bay Area people get to Lake Tahoe, is going to be getting about a foot of snow per 12 hours on Monday and Tuesday. They just do snow out here very differently from how we do back east -- to use technical meteorological language it's like a bigger thing

This is useful. Sometimes I feel like a broken record in constantly complaining about people not defining their terms carefully and consistently, but I do think it's the root of a lot of unproductive discourse.
As I’ve seen some renewed back and forth about the actuality and/or possibility of artificial ‘intelligence’ over the last few days I thought it worth quickly rehearsing my official position for those unfamiliar with it. Much of this is a matter of methodological disambiguation.

This is why I don’t care for the work of James Madison, George Washington, Isaac Newton, Alan Turing, Leonardo da Vinci or… *checks notes*… Nikola Tesla.

I have no idea what any of this means and even the idea of trying to understand it or care just a little makes me so so tired

I'll never forget what Christopher Nolan said to me while we were bungie-jumping in Honduras 13 years ago today. "Jesse, a lot of anecdotes aren't easily fact-checked," he said. "Online you can just say stuff and enough people will believe it that the truth won't matter."
