We have passed laws that make non-fatal strangulation a stand-alone criminal offence to make it clear this conduct is wrong and unacceptable. I want to thank those affected by these acts of violence for their tireless advocacy, especially the loved ones of Joy Rowley.

Non-fatal strangulation is rarely an isolated event. It is often a concerning red flag, revealing an ongoing and escalating pattern of coercive and controlling behaviour – especially when it occurs in family violence circumstances.

Groups who are currently protected under the laws like the Islamic community have told us they’re not working – so while we work on expanding who’s protected, we’re also working on strengthening the protections they provide.

The Greens don’t seem to understand that expanding anti-vilification law to protect LGBTIQ+ Victorians is more than a press release & a vague Bill. If you rush laws they can end up working against the people they’re meant to protect — it’s incredibly complex, hard and worthy work

Emergency Services Minister @JaclynSymes joined us today to announce the activation of lifesaving services at four inland areas for tomorrow's public holiday. This is the first time such services will patrol these locations, in response to increased drownings at inland waterways.
