Important but difficult day for #suicideprevention with ONS confirming a rise in rates. We need govt action now - not just words of commitment but actions such as renewing vital local suicide prevention funding @DHSCgovuk @hmtreasury and every govt dept working to prevent suicide
Today’s @ONS data shows that suicide rates registered in England and Wales last year were the highest in more than two decades. These figures show that suicide rates are at a 20-year high and even worse than expected. This needs to be a wake-up call for the Government.

Good to see Labour & Lib dems include explicit mention of #SuicidePrevention in manifestos, w some key commitments in line w @samaritans policy asks. No mention of SP from Tories, despite commitment to reducing rates in the National Strategy <a yr ago.

Manifestos are out this week and at Samaritans we are reviewing what's being said on suicide prevention, in line with our policy recommendations. Shout out to Naomi Graves and Jake Runacres for work...

Good to talk to @sajidjavid and @TaliFraser about the importance of #SuicidePrevention training. We @samaritans want to see all frontline workers trained, to have the skills and confidence which can help save lives.

“I really, genuinely think this kind of training for MPs will save lives,” says Sajid Javid, ahead of his event with the emotional support charity Samaritans in Speakers House tomorrow morning.

There's a lot of content around #suicideprevention today. Well worth a read of this blog by the fantastic new Exec Lead of @NSPA_UK.
Today we're kick-starting a conversation about what’s changed in suicide prevention and what more is still needed. Here, NSPA Executive Lead Rosemary Ellis shares her reflections and her pledge for the future. https://t.co/BaykVLoHdc

For many, working in #suicideprevention is personal & professional. Today, like every day, I'm thinking of loved ones lost and loved ones who've found a way through. A strong cross-govt strategy that's funded & drives action is essential to save lives #WorldSuicidePreventionDay

People with lived experience have led the way in raising the issue of gambling related harm and suicide. The gambling industry must change - glad to have taken a small but important stand about this today.
Our words have been twisted by the CEO of the Betting and Gaming Council to downplay the devastating effect that gambling products can cause, and we won’t stand for it 🧵1/3

Listening to the fantastic @annawardley talk about her fellowship at the @ChurchillFship #connectandinspire2023 event. Excited to discuss plans with this year's cohort and delighted that @samaritans is a knowledge partner.

Great that @UKLabour announced its commitment to achieve a decline in rates of suicide within five years. But is this enough? We @samaritans want a commitment by whoever is in power to achieve the lowest ever rate of suicide recorded. Cross govt approach & investment is critical

Hugely important moment recognising importance of suicide prevention voluntary sector - £10m announced in the Budget. A great step forward thanks to @sajidjavid @DHSCgovuk. Obviously still more needed to fund whole new strategy but we'll take the win today! #SuicidePrevention

Whenever Govt is asked how it's preventing suicide, it says it's investing £57m. What it doesn't say is that this is an old commitment and is nearly all spent already. #Budget2023 needs to deliver for a new #SuicidePrevention strategy @DHSCgovuk @hmtreasury

I usually tweet about suicide prevention but epilepsy is also an issue close to my heart. @youngepilepsy found that 21% of children with epilepsy were excluded from activities & opportunities at school. Here's some blatant discrimination outside of school from Reading FC.
Sadly @lpftweets that’s NOT true @RFCCommunity (as it stands) do NOT allow kids with #epilepsy to attend the camps or birthday parties for that matter Diabetics who could sadly have seizures are ok to attend, but epileptics are discriminated against As you can see below👇

Brllliant morning at #NSPAConf. Great to have the confirmation of a new national #SuicidePrevention strategy from @DHSCgovuk. The noise levels at lunchtime show just how valuable it is to get together on person!

The problem with Govt scrapping provision around legal but harmful in the Online Safety Bill is that you don't stop being impacted by harmful suicide and self harm content when you turn 18. This is about saving lives #SuicidePrevention
