Learning to forgive yourself is a big part of learning how to draw and redraw. If you can't forgive yourself for drawing something poorly, try instead to forgive the drawing itself; treat it like a child who is trying her best. You wouldn't punish a child, you'd give her a hug.

Once I was drawing a picture on a train that took me a couple hours. After I finished, the lady sitting next to me told me she was astonished, that she had no idea someone could draw for that long. It really surprised me, that people might assume drawings are always made quickly!.

If you ever struggle with not liking yourself, or negative intrusive thoughts, try painting. When I'm painting, I forget I even exist; the brain switches into a different mode, and who I am is utterly unimportant. It's a relief to get away from myself and go somewhere else.

A.I. lets us think it's all about the finished picture. But I find the joy is when I've worked out the knots in earlier sketches and I can lose myself in the space of the final picture. Time ceases to exist, I'm surrounded in love for the world I'm painting, fully immersed in it.

So if you want to learn how to draw and paint better, you may need to work on extending your attention span. Don't give up after a first failed picture, push through and try again, and again. Try to simplify the subject to shapes, examine textures, consider patterns, vary lines.

Both ways have advantages, but with the latter, you end up spending more time with the subject, getting more chance to play and try things out. Interesting insights might arrive later during the process. The disadvantage is if you have a short attention span, you get frustrated.

I'm saying this because some people instantly draw beautifully, they've already captured the essence of the subject in their brain before making the marks. But if you can't do this, it *doesn't* mean you're a bad artist, you just might need to make more than one drawing.

Making a drawing can be almost like getting to know someone. People are complicated. Sometimes my first drawing looks bad, but it's acquainting my brain with the basics. Later, after I know the subject better, I can think more about the artistry, how my lines and colours look.

When people say they can't draw, I wonder if it's because they make one bad drawing and stop. If it helps, my first drawing is often terrible, but it gives me a basis for working through a better sketch, and perhaps only then, making a third final drawing or painting.🧵.
