Gender norms are hard, but not impossible, to change. Our new paper suggests that when friends and family members back home take maternal longer leaves (because of more generous leave policy), immigrant moms in the U.S. take longer leaves--despite the cost.
🆕 RFBerlin Discussion Paper: @FurtadoDelia, @SamanthaTraj and @NTheodoropulos examine whether changes in maternity leave policies in immigrants' home countries influence their leave-taking behavior in the US. https://t.co/bfBnCwddGT

Menstruation sucks. It sucks so much it’s plausibly responsible for 14% of the gender wage gap. Women below 45 are much more likely to be absent around 28 days after their last absence than men are, and this leads to differences in promotion and productivity. 1/

Why is that? We point to three key limitations of the current policy: 1. Restrictive eligibility criteria, 2. Poor financial compensation and 3. That the leave is a transfer of rights and not earmarked to fathers.

Has it been a success? If we were expecting a significant increase in uptake – then no. We show with Eleonora Fichera (@EconUniofBath, @UniofBath , @GW4Alliance), Melanie Jones and Ezgi Kaya (@cardiffbusiness) that the policy has not increased take-up or leave length of fathers.
