Melissa now at T8.3. Hard to know what's truly under the hood without aircraft reconnaissance right now but satellite says surely this is a Category 5. Regardless, we're witnessing satellite history in the Atlantic tonight.
Melissa turned West Pacific grade over the past hour. Sudden, explosive expansion of its Central Dense Overcast reminiscent of some of some of the top-tier western North Pacific super typhoons. T numbers above 7.5 in the Atlantic??? Almost unheard of!

Melissa is more typical of a Super Typhoon in the Western Pacific near the Philippines over very warm deep water. These buzzsaw cyclones are at the "apex" of potential intensity, and firing on all cylinders.

Melissa is beginning to rapidly intensify IMO. The latest recon VDM message reported a closed 25 nm eye. Furthermore, VHT's are completing a final center wrap-around on IR, cutting off the last intruding dry air into the core. Expect faster intensification from now onward.
