This plan had many tears and losses. The inks & watercolour were tested to establish how stable they were. The plan was gently humidified to flatten the folds. Tears were repaired using remoistenable Japanese tissue, and losses were infilled with heavier tissue. @explorearchives

Many plans we hold are on tracing paper - ideal for working drawings, but now often brittle because of the methods used to make it translucent - the pulp fibres were heavily beaten before pressing to compact the fibres and press any air out, and oil/resin products often added.

On #nationalillustrationday we'd like to credit the illustrator - but who? It's an #archivemystery: the initials (top right) are similar to those on some drawings of Andover & Hurstbourne Park (clearer there), TOP10/2/34 - perhaps J/T, B, G/C. Can anyone help identify the artist?

It's #NationalIllustrationDay! This sketch shows Mr Troughton’s silk mill near Overton (built c1769 and demolished 1848), probably on 26 Aug 1794 (TOP245/2/4). The text mentions there were about 200 staff & 247 windows. #hampshirearchives #hampshireheritage #overtonhampshire
