Interdisciplinarity is challenging, non-linear, and requires collective input, which takes time and effort. But, it is almost always rewarding! 💪 Full article here: https://t.co/nGntdG256m 12/13

7 Do not judge interdisciplinary careers with the yardstick used for disciplinary researchers. Consider using the European Coalition for the Advanced Research Assessment’s principles of quality, impact, diversity, inclusiveness, and collaboration as assessment criteria. 11/13

6 Train interdisciplinary #PeerReviewers. Suitable interdisciplinary reviewers are hard to find, which means that manuscripts or grant proposals can get unfairly rejected. By creating a pool of interdisciplinary reviewers this issue can be significantly mitigated. 10/13

5 Universities should promote interdisciplinary structures & careers. Create institutes/centres that don't segregate disciplines with governance structures that include experienced interdisciplinarians beyond the institutions. Visiting Fellowships can help avoid groupthink. 9/13

4 #FlattenYourCreativeHierarchies. Research is creative, and enforcing a strict hierarchy - personal or disciplinary - can stifle it. As a leader, invite others to speak first lest you project your ideas. Apply EDI principles to break down silos and build a shared language. 8/13

3 Work towards the common good. All parties must offer something in collaboration. And, offer some things up. Focus on the overall goal, not disciplinary desirables. Compromise will mean that work is less prone to catastrophic misinterpretations of collective results. 7/13

2 Establish a common vision. Achieve this via an #InterdisciplinaryPrenup. The prenup will help identify shared or reciprocal challenges, values, risk appetites, and publication strategy, etc. Remember, "the only visions that take hold are shared visions" (HBR). 6/13

1 #Communication is everything! Be mindful that we don't speak the same language; we speak in discipline specific ways. Engage in equitable interactions. Build rapport with collaborators. Disagreements are bound to happen but framing them in respectful ways can be healthy. 5/13
