The first revolt of enslaved Africans in North America took place in 1526 and some believe it happen near what is now Georgetown, SC—the city where our museum is located.

Clarification: This would be the first revolt of enslaved Africans in what would eventually become the United States.

@GullahSc Trying not to be the nit-picky professor, but there was a slave uprising in Santo Domingo in 1521.

@GullahSc @imaniperry As someone trying to learn the history that wasn’t taught - I am befuddled. I thought #1619 was the date of arrival of the first enslaved Africans to what would become the US. But #1619 is just for British colonies? So what is the arrival date for what would become the US?

@GullahSc My grandmother was born there. Daughter of Irish and Swiss immigrants, who worked in a sawmill and baked for others. I have spent a lot of time these past few years thinking about the privilege skin color afforded the family. I hope to visit your museum one day.

@GullahSc Yep. Due to those revolts and other factors, it was a failed Spanish colony.. sadly, I don’t know the names of the ethnic groups of which the enslaved Africans called home. 1525 or 1526…
