Analysis on: getting to grips w/ Bayern; how silly good we are OOP; asking Bayern questions they haven’t been asked before; Rice’s ‘pendulum’ role; Zubimendi; Merino’s subtle movements; last-line wingers; ‘finishers’; and some rambling thoughts. I hope you enjoy ❤️

Saliba — originally staying deeper with Mosquera — has a full view, anticipates & catches Kane off guard. Madueke is off.

As Kimmich notes the gap & whips one into Kane, why can Zubimendi so confidently transfer markers to Gnabry? Pressing well is like a chain. If you’re convinced the player behind you is interlinked, you can jump to the next guy with full intensity & confidence.

Mosquera clocks on & stops his jump. As Kimmich picks up the ball in Bayern’s fluid base of 4, though, Karl finds himself freed up. Rice has stepped onto Kimmich, and Eze spots Karl on his blindside. Closed off? Not quite. Gnabry has joined in, meaning Zubimendi leaves Kane.

A hopefully subtle look at why Arsenal are so brilliant off-the-ball, focusing on communication, trust & applying pressure at all times. As Karl drops & Mosquera begins to follow, this is Stanišić‘s cue to stretch. Some problems start to emerge for Arsenal… 1/4

Pressing the playmaker, again. We’ve been utterly immaculate pressing high tonight. Bayern won’t have faced a side like it.

Calafiori striking the ball like that on the move tears in my eyes😭 Arguably the final piece of the puzzle for him to add going forward.

That being said, if you asked me “has Calafiori improved defensively?”, I’d say “probably” and leave it at that. With all the thanks going to Gabriel Heinze.

A lot of Calafiori’s defensive ‘improvements’ should be hard to see. That’s because the things he’s had to work on are quieter: picking which battles to engage with; his angles of approach; or here, reading where the knockdown is going to drop (starting position/distances).

I shouldn’t have gone so mild on it before: Merino is the best in the squad at these swivels & releases from high pockets. Uses his body as a buffer, hips are open, touch/weight on point, intent is aggressive (wants to pull the trigger). Zubimendi & Eze close in second.

Both our ‘pivots’ stretching like a CF for Eze’s 1st & 2nd goals respectively. Shout out Timber for the earliness of delivery & the urgency of pass; and Rice & Zubimendi for attracting all the attention so Eze can sneak in below.
