MPs object to Observer transfer. At the time of writing 18 MPs had signed. Please check whether your MP is among them; congratulate them if so; and encourage them to join if not. 🙏 #savetheobserver @gonuj93

PS: Happiest of birthdays to Billy Bragg, who came to our strike, sang timeless songs, and raised our hearts https://t.co/Wgpvvx8nRR

In the meantime, and despite the trying circumstances in which we find ourselves, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. (8/8)

GONUJ has informed GMG of our intention to take part in disruptive industrial action short of a strike in the New Year. If there are no improvements to mitigations or progress on governance reforms, GONUJ will vote to set substantive new strike dates for later in January. (7/8)

GONUJ are seeking fundamental reforms to governance and strong protections for Observer and Guardian colleagues. While GMG has offered some mitigations, they don’t go in any way far enough to protect the terms and conditions of all Observer and Guardian staff affected (6/8)

We were shocked that the Scott Trust chose to approve the deal while our members were on strike. Announcing it a week before Christmas is further evidence of the contempt with which the Scott Trust and GMG hold the pledge maintained for many decades of “living our values”. (5/8)

We also believe it represents a serious blow to the Guardian, ceding the UK news agenda to the right wing media at a time when liberal voices are needed more than ever. Historic industrial action, backed by a 93% mandate, laid bare the strength of feeling against this deal (4/8)

GONUJ are appalled at the decision to approve the sale of the Observer, in a deal we think will be disastrous for the future of the world’s oldest Sunday newspaper and for liberal journalism. https://t.co/u2SddibBNF (3/8)

Tortoise Media has formally signed the deal to buy The Observer and appointed Lucy Rock as the brand's editor (print).

Guardian and Observer staff striking to stop the sale of the Observer to Tortoise Media lost up to four days’ pay in order to do so. The link to donate to the NUJ’s Guardian and Observer staff hardship fund is here: https://t.co/yuNIYtT0K5 (2/8)

As we head into the Christmas break, GONUJ want to thank everyone who has supported us, with donations, statements, letters, reposts, and of course joining us on our strike days. Your solidarity is so much appreciated. Here's an update on where things stand. 🧵 (1/8)

So Tortoise now owns the Observer. For the sake of all involved let’s hope it works. If James Harding’s figures are to be believed the Scott Trust has just enabled and funded a potentially powerful competitor to the Guardian in the liberal media space. Strange times

The Scott Trust and Guardian Media Group (GMG) have signed a deal with Tortoise Media to buy the Observer. More to follow.

From @thetimes (£) "Tortoise is a thinly capitalised vanity project in search of a commercial model. Buying The Observer will give it a reason to tap backers for millions more... The Guardian is paying too much for a stake that isn’t big enough..." https://t.co/2RXQKyWGLT
thetimes.com
By failing to rid itself entirely of The Observer, the Scott Trust stays exposed to the Sunday paper’s woes — and takes on Tortoise’s as well

Thanks for your support and your little penguin, @RobBiddulph 🙏🏻
My former colleagues at the Observer and the Guardian are striking again today and tomorrow over the proposed sale of the Observer to Tortoise Media, and although I can't be with them person my little penguin drawing, their mascot, can. Solidarity forever! Handing over Britain’s
