Did you know, before #InTheDarkSpaces won an Ampersand, Aurealis & shortlisted for 6 other awards, it was rejected by 7 agents? So writers, keep on doing what you do, if you feel in your bones it’s your thing.👌❤️

I've students asking specifically for LGBTQIA+ YA that are happy and/or where the character's queerness isn't a source of angst. Y'all, the lack of stories meeting this basic condition is a bit shocking. Please give kids windows to see their lives in a better world. 🌈

Dear writers, agents, and publishers: We are here, and these are the books we want. There is an excited and diverse audience just waiting for more LGBTQIAP+ books, so please have the courage to write them, to represent them, and to publish them.

I grew up gay in country Australia, and I nearly didn't survive it. I've told my story for the first time at the link below. Please RT - it may help someone. https://t.co/oZ3Hov4fBA #BrightLightsNoCity #ownvoices #LGBT #gaypride #Pride2018 #pridemonth #LoveOzYA #Geraldton

Being part of the YA community means supporting each other & boosting each other's voices, especially on topics that matter. Not about attacking each other. Do onto others what you want to do yourself. Otherwise when you need support yourself, there'll be no one in your corner.

Just finished a really wonderful session at a school in Perth. I was the first author most of the students had met. Authors, please get out and service your communities.

Hey, hey, are you allosexual (not asexual) and writing a book? Do me a favor! Go look through your manuscript and if you see a line like "of course A was attracted to B..." a) "...A wasn't made of stone", b) "...A wasn't a robot", c) "...A was human, after all" DELETE IT! Thanks!

@malindalo It's also stupid business. Reading teens love LGBT content. I'm surprised no press has realized how financially viable shippers, Tumblr geeks, and fanboys/girls are. They've powered every huge movement for 20 years but presses act like they don't know what will succeed in YA.

Question time: what advice do you give to young feminist political writers. @Kirsty_Eagar “use what you think in your characters.” @RandaAFattah “story/character come first always.” Alice Pung “Don’t be afraid to be funny.” #AllDayYa #SydneyWritersFest #LoveOzYA

"On Writing Ownvoices: Being Bold Enough To Tell Your Story" is the first of a series of advice posts for young POC and queer POC writers. This one is deeply personal, but I hope it is helpful-- and I hope you enjoy 💕
