Kind of fascinated by the reactions to the new AVATAR that suggest it's a retread or more of the same, specifically because the last one felt pointedly like half a story. I've been expecting that to continue in a similar fashion.

I feel like in the larger narrative of David Fincher and Netflix, people forget his hand in this shit pile.

I can’t believe this movie includes a conversation about whether a Netflix film will get a theatrical release.

On some level, I am sympathetic to these people. It’s a tough market for anyone trying to get films made right now that aren’t just IP cash grabs. But they also won a few short term battles to potentially lose a much larger war for the future of the industry and the medium itself

I'm sorry to say it but all the filmmakers who have cozied up to Netflix over the years will also be partially responsible for whatever happens next. You can't play the victim for not getting proper theatrical releases anymore, what did you expect

They paid David Zaslav ALLLLLLL that money and his grand solution was to sell WB to Netflix. Left that ENTIRE brand and studio in ruin and go PAID for it.

If I told my 15 year old self about everything going on today, he'd mostly be stoked that the complete cut of KILL BILL and the original cut of STAR WARS were being released, but he'd be extremely confused that a company that mails DVDs could buy WB

Ellison's Paramount is up to some genuinely sinister shit, but all these projects sound terrible.

So what's the optimistic take here? The only thing I've got is that Hollywood has weathered downturns and eras of conglomeration before. All of them have come with huge headaches and threats to the industry, but the movies have continued. We can only hope that remains true.

It's just so dispiriting that Netflix, a company actively hostile to theatrical distribution, has acquired WB after the year of huge wins they've had at the box office. It was all for naught.

Netflix, by far the largest streamer, absorbing HBO Max, which is the third largest, really should set off monopoly alarm bells, not to mention what this terrible news could be for movie theaters and physical media.

As I get farther and farther away from coursework and more into my domestic life, I can feel my brain atrophying. I no longer feel capable of complex analytical thoughts most of the time, just constant lethargy and an endless loop of Ms. Rachel songs.

Here's the thing: Will Smith is fantastic in the first MIB, but he is not what makes the movie works. It's specifically the dynamic with him and Tommy Lee Jones, something every single sequel has fucked up to one degree or another. They are magical together in the first film.
