Work to dismantle the GNR sign on the Tyne Bridge will start tonight, Mon 15 Sep, with 5 overnight closures needed til Saturday morning, 20 Sep. On 4 days the closure will be from 8pm-6am, but on Thurs the closure will start at 11.30pm due to ECL @NUFC football at St James' Park

The Tyne Bridge will be closed to traffic tonight (Mon 18th) and tomorrow night (Tues 19th) from 8pm until 5am to enable repairs to the Great North Run signage on the eastern side. Pedestrians + cyclists will still be able to use the bridge but will be diverted around the works.

We're supporting @NorthumbrianH2O's Bin the Wipe campaign to raise awareness of the devastating consequences of wrongly flushing wet wipes down the toilet. Wipes do not break down like toilet paper and cause blockages in the pipes. More info at https://t.co/u37ln6aGMU.

Following our earlier update regarding congestion in the town centre. We have been informed that the Redheugh Bridge has now reopened. We expect this to ease congestion, with traffic travelling through Gateshead returning to normal very soon. We thank you for your patience.

Due to diversions and an issue with traffic lights near Tesco car park, there’s traffic causing congestion in G’head town centre. We are working with partner orgs to investigate. In the meantime time we recommend you avoid driving to the town centre unless absolutely necessary.

The A189 Redheugh Bridge over the River Tyne will be closed to all vehicles on Sunday 10 August 2025 between 6am and 6pm.

We're also taking the opportunity to repair a damaged section of the bridge parapet system, as well as cleaning the bridge drainage system to ensure it's working adequately ahead of the autumn and winter months.

The Redheugh Bridge will be closed to all vehicles on Sunday 10 August 2025 between 6am and 6pm. This is to allow for the first phase of its principal inspection, a very thorough survey of the structure.
