While finances are only one factor to consider when deciding whether to pursue PhD training following DPT education, we hope these findings will help students make informed decisions when planning the next stage of their careers.

We found that PhD training and a subsequent career in academia results in long-term earnings that offset the short-term earnings deficit that occurs with training. The increased long-term earnings also persist while adjusting for potential inflation and early-career investments.

There is a current shortage in PhD-level trained Physical Therapy researchers, but many DPTs are electing not to pursue PhD training often due to perceived financial barriers. We examined the short and long-term financial impact of PhD training after DPT education.
