Recognizing the rich diversity and proud heritage in athletic and school activity both past and present. It truly is always a great day to be a Hurricane.

GHS alum Nick Gilliam achieved his greatest golfing accomplishment in 2001. Playing for UF, he concluded his college career not only by winning the individual title at the NCAA Championships, but he helped propel the Gators to the team title as well by a whopping 13 strokes.

Today is Veterans Day and this site recognizes and salutes all veterans. In 1933 the Hurricane football team celebrated Armistice Day, as it was known then, by putting the clamps on Plant City High and winning 14-2. The Canes defense allowed a meager 4 point average that season.

Selected pages from the tournament program for the December 1994 Checkers Invitational boys basketball holiday classic. The Canes went 2-1; the enduring memory from it was Tharon Robinson's selection to the All-Tournament team, affirmation of how much Tharon had improved his game

Season Spotlight: 1921 baseball. The first schedule in school history that featured at least 10 games was also the first time baseball garnered substantial media attention. The denouement against Duval High was trumpeted as a mythical state title game. The Canes lost 5-1.

GHS 4 PKY 2. Boys soccer kicked off this week with 3 matches, going 1-1-1. The Canes won a wild, highly entertaining contest over the Blue Wave Wednesday night at PK. Twice they came back from 1 goal deficits and then stunned PKY with two goals in the last two minutes.

GHS Then and now: front entrance of the school. In keeping with the theme of this series of posts, the campus in the early 1960s had less foliage and brick and mortar.

One of the most acclaimed classes in Lady Canes soccer history went out with style on Senior Night in 2008. They gave up two early goals and trailed rival Oak Hall before starting a comeback. The game winner came with less than 2 minutes remaining and sent GHS home 3-2 victors.

Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio? The pastoral beauty of baseball is still intact to an extent, but the constant march of the digital age has eroded what makes it a great and unique event. The manual scoreboard at Tiny Talbot Field from 1979 exemplifies a simpler, quieter time.

After their first 6 seasons of existence yielded limited success, the GHS boys soccer program emerged from it's proto-club beginnings to transition into a legitimate success in the 1979-80 year. They achieved 15 wins and made the finals of a lengthy district tournament

Canes football concluded their season last night, video highlights included. As the team looks to improve for 2026, off-season hard work in the weight and class rooms, along with a healthy dose of perspective, are part of the learning and growing process for these young adults.

Rivalry game vs EHS tonight in football at Citizens Field. Going back to the 1986 game in this video clip. Raymond Foye was ubiquitous that night. Not only did he score both GHS TDs and rush for 112 yds, he also contributed 8 tackles on defense. The Canes won a close game 14-7.

GHS 3 Legacy 0. Lady Canes volleyball is Final Four bound after hitting on all cylinders and routing a good Lions squad to win their Region Wednesday. Of all facets blocking was dominant, keeping Legacy on their heels all night. Set points and a well timed kick are in the video.

In honor of Halloween enjoy this treat, a trick play from 1994. GHS punter Kenny Worob intentionally lobbed this fake punt on an arc that made it appear as though it was a punt and not a pass. It completely fooled the BHS returner; the Canes Ricky Ray hauled in the throw for a TD

'Warriors of 2011' When the Lady Canes volleyball team takes on Legacy for the right to go to the Final Four tomorrow, recalling here the last time a GHS team made it that far. The 2011 team won their district before defeating Lecanto, Springstead and Edgewater in Regional play.

Selected pages from the 2010 Hurricane baseball game program. A very good year that if memory serves is still the coldest I've experienced in total for any sport or season.

GHS 3 Gateway 0. In volleyball the Lady Canes played extremely well Saturday afternoon in their 2nd round playoff match; so much so that this was never in doubt from the start. They host Legacy in the Regional finals this Wednesday at 7:00 at GHS with a final four berth riding.

GHS takes on Vanguard tonight at Citizens Field in football. Highlights from the 2011 GHS-VHS game recall one of the most lethal passing combos in Hurricane history, Mark Cato to Chris Thompson. They struck fear in opposing defenses and accounted for multiple yardage and scoring
